Our environment is of much concern to many globally in our trying to be "green" & of course our health is of utmost importance & our longevity.
We should preserve our resources and try to be as "green" & preserving as possible, as we are not certain how long those resources for our future children & generations will last, or be able to renewed. Heaven forbid any other natural or unnatural disasters that we have not yet encountered occur.
It has already been proved that carpet imposes numerous health issues. There are factors ranging from the chemicals in the dyes to the tremendous amounts of dust, dirt & mold they retain.
I have learned the health aspects of a solid surface environment "first hand" from my own experiences with having a carpeted environment. I have severe allergies & have been asthmatic since I was two years old. My parents didn't really realize that my asthma was contributed from environmental allergies...they were aware of some food allergies. I believe that testing was more limited as well back then. There were also other conveniences that were not yet available such as central air-conditioning, advanced filtration systems, and air purifiers. No offense to my parents but it was amazing how much healthier it was when I moved away from home & was able to somewhat control my environment a little more. It truly wasn't a reality how much impact carpet had until I was well into my adulthood & married & had to have the carpet in our home removed due to our salt water aquarium flooding our living room @ 6am one morning, forcing all of the carpet to be replaced.... :( This is where the "real" experience began.
I was a fanatic about making sure I had the strongest vacuum & steam cleaned my carpets religiously...so therefore when we pulled up our carpet it was a complete shock to me just the incredible amounts of dust, dirt & I am sure mold that our carpets contained. It was then & there that I vowed not to have any more wall to wall carpet again...unless I could afford to remove it frequently, of which I truly felt a waste of investment & resources) for the frequency of replacement. It would have to be just throw rugs if anything. I also like the visual that came with out having carpeting... It just visually seemed much less cluttered & it was easier to keep clean & you could now see dirt if it were evident. My health improved dramatically & depending on the product you choose....usually lasts twice as long (if not the rest of your lifetime & your children's lifetime for that matter).
Solid Surface floor usually is an easier selling feature of a home for many of those reasons. Added bonus, it is usually easier to keep your environment cool in the summer & heated in the winter.
As a Certified Home Staging Professional of course it gives clean & minimized visual that we strive for with our projects (as mentioned with an occasional throw rug in various rooms).
I think for Floridians it is almost a must, but truly think that it is of benefit health wise for all regions & globally as well. This is also an affordable invention to clean all surfaces of flooring:
& this line is not as affordable...but is held in high regard by many clean representatives:
I pulled up a few of the "greener" choices that are available in flooring for any future projects that you or your real estate clients may be require. I also felt that it may be informational for those of you that may have children with health issues or yourself to know that this can be an important factor that affects quality of life at home. These green choices may be of "re-captured materials" (woods, tiles, stones, etc) or bamboo which produces rapidly in abundance, as well as man-made such as some nylon products or concrete which is almost infinite in life & wear.
Have a great weekend!! If I may be of service in your selection process, please let me know. It has been my experience that there are many of us that have benefits of purchasing for you as IAHSP® professionals through our "trade" list of vendors which result in reduced prices for you as well as access to a unique & expanded flooring selection.
Hopefully this will be shared forward for a healthier environment for all :)!
& if carpet is a must then may be these choices by Shaw are of benefit....
