In Kamloops, there is no better way to enjoy summer than to spend time on one of our many lakes and rivers. Whether you’re looking for speed and adventure or a quiet place to relax and read a book, there are plenty of places to explore in Kamloops.
Are you an adrenaline junkie? Do you like the thrill of speeding down the rapids? If you said yes, then you’re ready for whitewater rafting. Riding the rapids on Kamloops’ rivers provides some of the best thrills in nature. There are 1-hour, 2-hour, and half-day trips available on the Adams River and the breathtaking Clearwater River, all led by some of the most experienced rafters in the area.
Is your style a little less action-packed? Don’t worry; there are many tributaries, lakes, and rivers that provide a more serene experience. Canoeing and kayaking are popular methods for enjoying the Thompson Rivers. Since the rivers run right through the city, there are easily accessible boat launches and plenty of parking. If you want to get a little further out, try Paul Lake or Shurmway Lake, each boasting great waters only 15 minutes from downtown. Finally, may we suggest Kamloops Lake? With its marina and boat launches, it is the perfect launch point for viewing the Balancing Rock and learning about this great legend.
I understand that not everyone wants to be out on the water…for some of us, relaxing on the shore and dipping our toes in can be the best way to enjoy an afternoon. If you’re more into picnics on the beach, we suggest Riverside Park. Featuring a playground and concession stand, this park is perfect for a family picnic…and it’s walking distance from downtown. You may also consider Overlander’s Beach. Located where the North and South Thompson Rivers meet, it’s at the center of the city. Pioneer Park is our third pick, and it is also only a short walk from downtown. Featuring a boat launch, picnic tables, and washrooms, this dog-friendly park is perfect for a family outing!
