5 Smartphone Apps That Will Keep You Safe and Connected While Driving!

By
Services for Real Estate Pros with Moby

Ask any REALTOR® what the two most important tools for the job are and the unanimous answer would be their phone and car. Our cars are an inseparable part of our work lives where it seems we spend a majority of our time, especially if we are working in rural areas! Our phones are as necessary as air when it comes to connecting with clients, colleagues and family. Unfortunately problems arise when we mix the both of them!

All of us are familiar with dangers associated with the use of gadgets, such as phones, while behind the wheel. However, even we were startled by the latest report released by GHSA last month, stating that 25% of car crashes in the United States involve the driver using a gadget.

To ensure that we are as safe as possible on the road, we wanted to share with you 5 smartphone apps that will help you stay safe:

Drive Safe.ly

Drive safe.ly keeps you connected on the road by reading your text messages aloud and sending text responses via your voice command. Perfect for those of us who use text messages on a frequent basis.

Cost: Free Lite version or $13.95 Annually

Not While Driving

Not While Driving detects when your car is in motion and puts your smartphone in sleep mode until the car stops.

You can override the sleep mode, but the app will send a designated contact an email, where you would explain why you needed to use your phone on the road. This app seems perfect for parents who worry about their teen’s driving too!

Cost: Free

aCar

aCar tracks and manages your car’s maintenance needs, as the last thing you want is to have your car break down in the middle of nowhere! aCar allows you to manage the maintenance needs of your car, and reminds you when you need to change your oil, air filter etc. Great app for us busy folk who sometimes forget  about our car check-ups!

Cost: Free

Google Voice Search

Need to look up a location point on a map? Want to search the closest gas station? Google’s Voice search allows you to search all of Google’s features using voice commands. If you’re an Android user, Google Voice search, allows you to open up applications, send texts/emails without having to reach for your phone!

Cost: Free

Moby

Moby’s location sharing feature allows you to share your up-to-date location with your chosen colleagues, family and friends, within Moby’s Map interface or via sms/e-mail with non-Moby friends. With one touch of a button you can easily let your contacts know you are on your way, or let them see you are running a little late! If you are ever in an emergency on the road, Moby also allows you to quickly  send an alert to your contacts with your exact GPS location.

Cost: Free

Don't forget that no business phone call is worth risking your safety! If you have an urgent phone call to make, be sure to pull over in a safe spot to do so!

Do you know of any apps that will keep us safe on the road? If so we would love for you to tell us in the comment section below!

Take care and be safe everyone!

Thank you for these apps.  I'd like to sneak some of these on to my 20-something's phones.

I'll go look at Moby, wonder if my kids would let me put that on thier phones?

Great suggestions, but what happens when you are riding in a car with someone, does that put your phone in sleep mode as well, even though you are not driving?

Will put it on my kids phones.  That is super!  Thanks.

This is a great post, cellphones are part of our moment to moment lives and the distraction of the phone and sometimes the content of the message certainly do put ALL of us at risk.  Thank you for sharing, I will continue to share your great apps.

try iOnRoad - FREE

www.ionroad.com

iOnRoad is a newly launched app that uses the Smartphone’s native camera and sensors to detect the vehicles in front of the driver, and will alert users when they are in danger. Similar to  a visual radar, the iOnRoad app constantly maps the range of the objects in front of the driver in real-time, considering the user’s current speed.

As the risk crosses a certain threshold, a visual warning will pop up along with a sound alert to warn the driver of a possible collision, allowing them take action.

Using a car mount for their Smartphone, users can set the iOnRoad app in either the “Augmented Reality” mode, similar to the HUD system that pilots use to display mission critical information or “Background” mode, where the application can run behind another app, only alerting when it needs to warn the driver of danger.  This setting allows users to access their GPS or use their loudspeaker.  It is free, with premium features. www.ionroad.com

Susan, Moby will actually give your teens more control over their freedom! Considering how some of us call our teens on a frequent basis to see if they are ok, Moby will allow them to let the parents know they are ok with a discreet tap of a button. Saving them time, and ahemmm embarrassment, while providing us with that much needed peace of mind.

Ellie, glad you found our list useful!

Teresa, you can over-ride the “sleep mode” if you are a passenger in a vehicle.

MaryBeth, thanks! Do let us know what you think of the apps!

Alexandra, thanks for the suggestion, iOnRoad seems like a great app!

Sound like some great apps. Many times we just cannot let go of those phones--even for a minute.

This is some good stuff. I use google voice, and I am going to get rid of it. I have noticed more than half my calls ring on my phone to 100% always ring on my computer.

Melissa, our phones sure can be tempting! But we need to remind ourselves that are safety and the safety of others are a lot more important than replying to a text or e-mail.

Corinne, glad you liked our suggestions! Hopefully your adult kids will see the benefits of being disconnected while driving!

Susan, you’re more than welcome! We sure love Google Voice too!

James, you can still use Google Voice as a smartphone app, without having it connect to your Gmail phone.

Sherri, you’re welcome! Do let us know what you think of the App!

The Kombrink team, exactly!
