Armageddon! Carmageddon! Part One Finished!

The After action Report is here. The big hype was very good, Angelinos behaved well and it was like being on another country. The roads and freeways were empty. Some Angelinos took advantage of $4.05 flights to get out of town; others went to Restaurants and paid $4.05 for hamburger meals. There was a lot of creative marketing being done to commemorate the closing of the 405 Freeway.

405 Bridge after Carmageddon Part 1

Any residents of Los Angeles and vicinity took my advice and stayed by their pools. Some stayed in their pool homes; others stayed in their Condominium Complex by the pool or went away for the weekend. So this was all good news. I enjoyed watching the empty streets on the news.

carmageddon half a bridge

Thanks to watching the news I discovered that this was just Part One. Next year we will have Part Two of Cramageddon! They only took half the bridge down. Please do not ask me why? I am sure they had good reasons. How else could they torture Angelinos for another year?

Traffic after Carmageddon on the 405 Freeway

Needless to say here are some pictures of everything being back to “normal” traffic is unbearable again and it takes 45 minutes to go 6-7 miles and we can look forward to next year, when they will take the rest of the bridge down.

405 Freeway Normal Traffic

Now that I am armed with this knowledge I will look forward to my two days off from conducting Real Estate in Los Angeles, CA. next year.

Kathleen, I agree with you, in Massachusetts they took a bridge down and had the one next to it ready to use....

Endre, I think the governments secret little motto is "why complete or do anything right the first time when you can do it half-assed and inconveniece as many people as possible a second time"?  Anyway, it's kind of nice having a built in holiday next year.

Endre, there has to be a lot of Chicago people living (working in government) in CA otherwise you wouldn't be so inconvenienced.  Having said that...everyone knows I'm from Chicago and love it so don't give me a hard time about these comments.

Here in the Midwest, we heard that it all went well and people were somewhat back to normal after they re-opened the 405.  And, they did credit you, Endre. for convincing people to remain calm, stay at whatever pool they could find and out of their cars.  Congrats!

Endre - maybe you should book a trip to Alaska during that time period next year. The news made it sound like it was easy schmeesy! I'm sure you managed to keep everyone in line and calm. :)

My sister-in-law lives in LA. I don't know how y'all do it! We are spoiled. We complain when we have to cross over I-45 to go to WalMart! (5 minutes MAX!  And that's if you are across town!)

Endre, That's a long time to wait for another 2 days off.  We do not even have an overpass in all of McCurtain County...   The railroad actually crosses highway 70 in Valliant and in Broken Bow... the arms come down and stop traffic for the railroad.  The Valliant crossing is right where there is a train switch and can back up traffic for quite a ways while the trains are switched to the other tracks.

We move at a little slower pace here but that's the reason that some folks want to move here..  I don't think I would handle the high traffic and hectic pace of big city life.  :)

The freeways up there were clear because all the Angelenos were down here! We had traffic like we’ve never seen, the Zoo was packed, and the lines of cars going to and from Mexico were like nothing I’ve ever seen.

Hi Endre - I heard more about the LA traffic than the NYC traffic during that period.  They certainly made sure everyone knew it was being shut down - even from 3000 miles away.

When I heard the 405 was going to be shut down, I thought no big deal.  I've sat for hours on that highway, creeping along.  I assume that these measures will better serve the public and hopefully make traffic exceed 25 miles per hour.

Hi Endre, I learned I just missed this "event" on my recent trip to LA...after being gone for so many years and living now in flatlands of the south, it is truly a car culture shock on those freeways! Nice post!

Hi Endre, There was a lot of hoopla on the news about this.  Glad to hear it all worked out and traffic is back to normal.  The 4.05 was a great marketing idea.
