The famous, colonial-style home in Toms River, which was used in the movie “The Amityville Horror,” is up for sale for $1.35 million.
In the 1979 film, James Brolin and Margot Kidder play a couple who bought a possessed home in Amityville, N.Y. The Amityville Horror was one of the most successful films produced by an independent studio at that time. It was a huge box office success, earning more than $86 million in he US.
Outside filming wasn’t done at the house on Long Island, where a similar real-life story was supposed to have happened, but at the Brooks Road house, where a superstructure was built around portions of the home to make it look like the Amityville one.
In 1981, the house was moved after the filming and positioned directly on Brooks Road, rather than toward the corner of Brooks and Dock Street, where a new home was built. A boathouse that the film company built for the movie is now part of that new property.
The 10-room house, built in 1920, has four bedrooms and three full- and two half-bathrooms. It was renovated in 2003, including the addition of granite counter tops in the kitchen and dark wood cabinets. They also added Venetian faux painting and restored the home’s hardwood floors.
There is a two-car garage, a pool, a dock with a boat lift and a personal watercraft dock. The house also has a home theater and a wet bar in the basement.
