You have worked hard to build your client database, organize all of your contracts and other electronic "paperwork" and pictures. All of a sudden your computer stops working, a fire, flood, tornado, hurricane, etc happens and now you don't have your data anymore. Are you still in business?
It amazes me how many people don't think about the continuity of their business. Although there are many potential disasters, I would like to talk about IT disasters briefly.
We take for granted that our data will be on our computer and we will always be able to access it. This is simply not the case. We are living on borrowed time with our computer. It is not a question of if it is a question of when your computer will not work (crash). We owe it to ourselves, our clients and other associates to be prepared for this situation.
Believe it or not, most data loss is actually unintensional deletion (the ooops with the delete key). Without a proper backup in place, you are unable to recover from a minor or a major data loss.
You may be asking "what is a proper back"? A proper backup system stores your data both onsite (for quick recovery in most cases) and offsite for restores from a catastrophic event. Your backup is only as good as the data you can restore from it. It's important to test your restore process at least once a quarter. You don't want to find out after a disaster that you were backing up garbage. You also need to monitor the success of your backups and correct any problems that may arise.
As you can see, there is a lot to just this small tasks of making sure your data is protected and can be restored, when required. Just as you hire a lawyer to protect you legally and a CPA to help with you finances, it's important to have a qualified IT (computer) team to support you.
