Some Thoughts on Fluoride:
- 90% Of the water fluoridation chemicals originate as scrubber waste in the smokestacks of the fertilizer industry, and contain numerous contaminants such as arsenic, aluminum, lead, cadmium, chromium, mercury and berrylium
- The industrial waste byproduct used to fluoridate water has never been tested for safety (www.keepersofthewell.org)
- The only tests of the chemicals used to fluoridate most water show increased lead levels in children who drink it (Masters et al, Association of Silicofluoride Treated Water with Elevated Blood Lead, NeuroToxicology, 21(6): 1091-1100, 2000)
- The Food and Drug Administration has not approved the use of any form of fluoride
- The American Academy of Pediatricians and the American Dental Association in 1995 recommended that children up to 6 months age get no fluoride, and children 6 months to 3 years get less fluoride than what is contained in one cup of water fluoridated at 1 ppm (www.ADA.org)
- Sources of fluoride in the diet continue to increase (Whitford, 1994)
- Approximately half of all fluoride ingested accumulates in the bones(GM Whitford, Intake and Metabolism of Fluoride, Adv Dent Res 8(1): 5-14, June, 1994)
- Many studies have found increased hip fractures associated with fluoridated water, especially in women exposed to fluoride before and during menopause when most bone remodelling occurs. (Danielson et al, Hip Fractures and Fluoridation in Utah's Elderly Population, JAMA, 268(6), 1992 and Dr. John Lee, Fluoridation and Hip Fracture, Fluoride, 26(4), pp 274-277, 1993)
- Children may be more sensitive to the harmful effects of fluoride as more may be incorporated into their bones (Whitford, 1994)
- Certain segments of the population are at greater risk, including infants, kidney impaired, and allergic individuals (See Should Natick Fluoridate?, 1997, 13E. Central St., Natick, MA. And Lord Mayor's Taskforce on Fluoridation Final Report, Brisbane City Council, Australia, 1997, pp. 56)
- The amount of intake of fluoride is dependent upon the nutritional status of individuals (UNICEF article on Fluoride)
- Fluoride is very difficult to remove from the water, and most water filters will not remove fluoride
- The risks associated with water fluoridation with fluorosilicates has never been assessed
