As Agents We Love to Brag!

Margaret Rome

As agents we love to brag!  But how do you do it without sounding like a show off?

                                                                                                                                                                                                                         We love to brag!

When I got my very first office manager put up a banner that read: 'Congratulations Margaret'.

That only happened once...they figured it was beginner's luck.  Little did they know!

How do we get that banner today?

We create it. We make it happen and blogging is a wonderful way to brag! I would rather call it sharing my success. It is a way to let others know we are good at what we do!

We do so much in this business giving advice to clients, friends and even other agents. We make things happen for our buyers and sellers. We help them realize their dreams and  solve a myriad of problems. We become the adviser, counselor,  negotiator,  stager, conductor, marketing person, salesperson, psychologist and confidant ...all while being the professional who continues listing and selling homes.

As agents we love to share our success and what better way than right here on ActiveRain, I don't have to wait for some one to "notice'' what I've done. I can announce it in banner headlines, right on my blog. I can share the road to success with others. Yes some may call it bragging but that's OK.

One definition of bragging  is to speak of (one's own achievements, possessions) ...boastfully.

You need some confidence in this business to brag and do it successfully. I love hearing of others achievements. I am honored when they share the positive results of their hard work. I love encouraging others. Most of us want this reinforcement just like when we were kids,.. "Good job", "Mommy is proud of you."

How do you BRAG without being offensive?   You could run around saying I am the best! I sold a gazillion million this year, I am the top honcho in the entire world. If you are not going to win  friends or influence people.

You do need to have confidence  to let the public know  you can get the job done.

I like this quote by John Unitas, also known as 'The Golden Arm" who was a great  Baltimore Colts Quarterback.

“There is a difference between conceit and confidence. Conceit is bragging about yourself. Confidence means you believe you can get the job done.”

And remember Mohamed Ali...“I am the greatest of all time!” Ali was asked why he bragged so much and his reply was, “It ain't bragging if you can back it up!''

Yes it would be wonderful if we could  rely on the rest of world recognizing our expertise...but don't count on it!

You have to share your expertise and you can do this by bragging blogging!

Margaret - there is a saying about walking softly and carrying a big stick ..... in your case here I would say you  speak softly and post often ..... that's not bragging to me just quietly telling it like it is.

Bragging. . . I guess that would be pride . . . and the Bible says "pride cometh before a fall". . . so I try really hard not to be prideful and/or brag.  Actually I am not very good about taking compliments either, but I am getting better.  :)

Florence,We get our accolades when we do right by others and earn their trust.

Kristi, You have to let that client know what you do first.

Thanks Carol.

James, You gotta give them something to brag about. Are you?

Kathy, Thank you. Your comment is appreciated.

Margaret, one more gold star to you - and one more 'called shot' for me.

And, yes, will have my bragging coming up later tonight - if I can keep awake till late. Recovering from first kidney stone surgery so you may not have seem me more often on AR off-late. (One more coming up in couple of weeks - and hopefully, I'll be back in full swing...)

Margaret - Mohammed Ali could back all right, but it still sounded bragging and was quite obnoxious on purprose.

I guess in certain way we all do it (LOL)

I try not to brag but to just talk about the market and my knowledge of real estate. If you are bragworthy people will notice and you won't have to brag at all. Just my thoughts on this!

Nice point. Brag if you can back it up! Otherwise you're just an insecure novice bragging to feel better about herself.

Gretchen, Thanks for stopping by.

Mike, People know about  Mike Mayer because of your marketing. You are constantly  sharing your expertise with others. Your promotion of your book is a perfect example.  Others might call it boasting.

Rosalie, That is how people learn from you. You are sharing your knowledge with them.

Jon, Mohamed had quite a following and many thought his bragging was obnoxious. He could get away with it and it made for great PR.

Hi Margaret,

Interesting post.

You don't need another comment, but here goes.

I find bragging to be a complete turn off. Always.

In my first office I got the salesman of the month plaque month afer month. Then salesman of the year, Lister of the year. At one point I had these big plaques all around the top row of my office.

One day I threw them all away.

Then I went to an office where the culture was one of No Bragging allowed. I liked the feel of that culture much better. I stayed in that system for 21 years.

I agree.  It is not bragging so much as letting the public know that you are still in business and still successful at helping THEM.

Cheryl, Just my way of bragging, I mean blogging.

Phil, Love your comment and it is inspiring me to write another post. ..something along the line of you can't take those plaques to the bank!

BB, You are still sooooo good looking! Thanks for sharing your pretty face with us. Please give TLW a hug for me.

Don, It is our job to let them know we are in the is not their responsibility to remember.

Great blog! I think there a lot of insecure agents sometimes who love to brag but in the wrong way which makes fellow agents and clients turned off. You have to "Sell Your Own Apples" and do it like you said in blogging or in a more diplomatic way. I find facebook and other social media too. Testimonials are a great way to brag but coming from your clients and in facebook just announcing you sold a home to a lovely couple with their photo in front of the home. There are so many more nice ways to brag then to say how great your doing and how great you are ...snore.
