This was a featured post a short while back. I bookmarked it and was reading it again this morning. BLiz may not be "official SEO experts" but the are in my book! If you missed it the first time around, take a look and see what you think!

blogWe're NOT SEO Experts, But We've Got an Idea......

We're not SEO Experts by any means.  We're not gurus and don't expect to be.  The only thing we want is for the consumers to find our posts.  We learn a bit here and there, we continue working on improving the effectiveness of our blogging without sacrificing readability for the consumer.  When the gurus start throwing out terms like H1 and h1 and h2 and alt-tags....well my eyes just may glaze over in confusion....and yes, I know there are classes to help with this....time...need more time!!! :)

Our main non-blog website is a template site with built in basic analytics included.  For our Active Rain blogs we're installed the Google Analytics widget to both our main Outside Blog and our patio home niche Outside Blog.  In a typical week we'll take a look at the stats for the blogs to see WHAT search terms are driving the consumers to our posts.

We'll find some interesting stuff on those search terms.  We've told you before with a post about cupcakes, foreclosures and elections.  It's not unusual for us to find a fellow Active Rainers name in the search...obviously your comments and our comments are being found by Google!

Now we can do one of two things with the information....just laugh at some of the oddball things that bring people to us, OR use the information to improve.

See something that keeps popping up?  It may have 43 different combos of words, but the theme is the same?  Ask yourself, are you doing ENOUGH posts on that topic?  The consumer is SCREAMING at you that topic is something they want, they need, and guess who can fill that niche?  You, or your competition?  Get there first, with the most AND the best!

Now another idea kicking around in our heads that is a result of those keyword searches is maybe we can do something similar to what we do with our listings.  We buy the street address for each of our listings and use a Forward with Masking to point to the page on our iHouse site.  Sellers like it, and it's a lot easier to tell a buyer call over the phone to type in www.7213Timbernoll.com then to say go to our site, click Featured Listings, then look for the West Chester home, then click for all the information you could want.

So our question?

Why couldn't we do the same type exercise with a blog post that we wanted to stake out increased digital turf for?  Both the listing and the blog post have a fixed URL that you can point a new domain to.

Say you blogged about a subdivision named Serenity Now for instance?  For about $10 a year you could buy the domain for SerenityNow.com or whatever extension you want.  Point it to your post.  If you do more posts on Serenity Now, we could go back and add a link on the original post to point to the update or expanded topic, or maybe even change which post we point the purchased domain to.

In essence, you're creating an interlinked world of Serenity Now posts without actually creating a website solely devoted to the Serenity Now community.

And you could repeat this process for any community, any event that you wanted to.  We suspect this would give us a bit more Google Juice.  I know for us, if my Google Search results show a domain name that actually includes my search terms, I'm more likely to click that link than a domain name that doesn't mean anything to me.

So anyone with more SEO knowledge, is there a reason this wouldn't work?  An easier way to do it?  Your input is appreciated!

Joni, Thanks for the reblog!  We ultimately got help from Lisa Udy's son Chase Green setting up a WP site.  Now for the hard work, doing all the posts! :)
