A Nation Of Entrepreneurs? The Next Stage Of The American Dream?
I thought this was a very interesting blog post, which recently appeared here on Active Rain. I am using the re blog feature, so others can also have the opportunity to learn new things. Thanks
I noticed something this week...more and more people I'm speaking to are self-employed. Some form of contractor, consultant or small business. I am too, of course.
Then something interesting happened at my house...my husband has taken a new position as an Independent Contractor for a software company. This is a new model for software sales....similar to a manufacturer's rep, or a franchise right to sell. Really interesting.
In this model there is company support, training, resources, but he will operate within his territory as an independent and run it as a LLC.
It's something we've never seen before...and it came about out of the blue. My husband has spent his career in the software industry working with fairly young companies as their VP of Sales and brings them to acquisition. Often as an employee, sometimes as a consultant. His most recent project just ended and he was looking for something new. This just presented itself.
It makes me wonder.....what other industries are moving to independent contractors? Down side? no health insurance. Up side? Huge financial reward for sales. We'll see....
My son is taking the California Bar Exam today, and with the lack of jobs out there, he's talking about a blog and going independent to supplement other opportunities. My friend has just started a photofusion business, her husband has left his company to contract with them instead and other complimentary products.
Is this a trend? If companies aren't hiring then are we just creating our own jobs? Just wondering...but I like it.
