The answer the question of “Why I chose Real Estate” is really pretty simple, it is what I wanted to do, because I love the rewards, satisfaction, and challenges that it brings. But if someone had told me when I was growing up that I would spend almost all my adult life in sales related fields, I would have laughed at them. A career in sales was not something that I would have imagined, nor would it have been something that those that knew me would have imagined me doing either.
I would label myself when I was growing up as rather shy and introverted kid. These are not qualities that you think of when you think of a salesman. It was not until I went into the Navy that I started to come out of my shell, but sales was not something that I would still have seen in my future.
I left the Navy in 1974, and married my bride of 37 years, moved back home to Rhode Island. It was time to start a career, and an opportunity to join John Hancock Life Insurance Company became available. I was fluent in Portuguese, and they needed someone to cover a heavily populated Portuguese Community for them. The idea appealed to me, and my induction into sales began.
I left John Hancock after four years, and went into Industrial Sales, when an opportunity to join a Material Handling Company became available. It proved to be a good decision, and a profitable one for the next two decades. Joining this company also meant that I had to move to Connecticut which I did not hesitate to do. During this time my wife and I started a family, and the job not only provided me with a good income, but also the freedom to be a part of my two boys lives while they were growing up. I enjoyed my time with Rand Material Handling, but it reached a point that it was obvious that a change was needed.
At that time McCue Mortgage was looking to hire several new Loan Officers, and doing mortgages was always something that appealed to me. The thought of working in an industry that helped people achieve their dream of owning a home was something that sounded rewarding, and challenging, so I applied.
I knew nothing about mortgages, but I was will to learn, and to put in the time and work to make myself a success at it. It meant longer hours than I had been working, and now
working weekends was part of the job. But my two boys were now grown up, and my time was my own again, so the longer hours, and weekends was not a problem.
Real Estate is a relationship business, and the Lending side of the industry is no exception to that. To be successful you have to be able to develop relationships with Realtors, and Buyers. By this time in my life I was no longer a shy, introverted kid any more, in fact I had become almost the opposite. My years in sales prior to joining McCue Mortgage had prepared me well with the sales skills that I would need to be successful as a Loan Officer.
Making the move that I did proved to be a wise one, and my expectations were correct. I enjoy what I do, and look forward to the challenges that this business brings each and every day. This business has many challenges, especially in the present market that we find ourselves in, but it is meeting those challenges and overcoming the obstacles, that makes it fun for me.
So again to the question of “Why I chose Real Estate”? hopefully now you can see why it was a simple question to answer. It is what I wanted to do, because I love the rewards, satisfaction, and challenges that it brings.
