Amish farmstead Lancaster PA

Lancaster living has always been concerned with the care of the earth. Before living green became popular, Lancaster living emphasized caring for the land, conserving resources, tending to one's little corner of the world so future generations would be able to make a living have long been embraced.

This picture shows how energy is conserved and generated in multiple ways. You will notice the laundry drying in the sun and wind naturally produced by nature. This Amish family is generating some energy through harnessing the wind and the sun. Ironically this family does not have electricity and goes a step further than most in living green in Lancaster.

Not near as "live off the land" as an Amish family... but I was was raised with gardens, clothes lines and recycling (in the manner of composting) garbage and continue with these traditions.  Recently I was really very happy to hear my mom tell my daughter she was very happy and proud that I'd learned to can, freeze veggies and make jellies and jams.  I suppose when I was a whinny kid saying... "why are we doing this... they sell jelly at the store" my mom thought some family traditions would be lost.  My young daughter wouldn't do it now... but knowing how I felt at her age... I have faith she will come around.

So tell me.. what are they using the wind and solar energy for???  Or when you say they have no electricity do you mean they are just not connected to a public utility?

Tammy, they are not hooked up to public utilities. They tend to use gas lanterns for light and diesel or gas powered engines to produce some energy. I am not sure what they are using the solar and wind power for. They are amazingly ingenius and have varied business interests.

Cal - LOL perhaps the energy generated is used by the younger generation to power their computers and cell phones ..... or perhaps in a more practical way their refrigeration it does seem a litlle odd to see them (the alternate energy sources).

ps is that a light or a satellite dish up on the pole

Kathy, I think you are referring to a pulley. They are able to stand in one place and hang laundry and then pull the line to hang the next article of clothing. When dry they just reverse the action.
