Marie Antoinette's Hamlet

The Tower

It can be pretty boring being a queen. In 1785, Marie Antoinette had a hamlet built for her amusement at Versailles, which included a farmhouse, a mill, a dairy, a barn and other buildings, all constructed around a pond. It was a working village, with peasants imported to inhabit it, and it is said that Marie Antoinette enjoyed milking the cows, and often spent time there.

The Queen's House

The Hamlet is a lovely place, a real surprise amidst the opulence and formality of Versaille's palaces and gardens, but there's no question that it was a fantasy world - real hamlets and farms of the time were nowhere near this nice.

Great post Dick, thanks for sharing! I visited the Hamlet and Versailles about 5 years ago and was amazed at how beautiful Marie Antionette's playground was, even hundreds of years later.

Just another example of those that govern having no idea what real life is like!  ;)

That's a neat story, Dick.  I had no idea such a thing existed.  Interesting that they even "imported" folks to fill the village.  Wow.

Hi Dick, Never saw this before.  I think it is interesting that this post is just before your parable....maybe this was part of your inspiration for that post.....?

Never heard of that either and we study Versailles in high school. Guess it wasn't seem as important, of course, teenagers wouldn't have carried most likely.
