The first thing I do when I jump into my car is buckle my seat belt. After I fight to back out of my crazy driveway, I turn up the radio and proceed to jam out. I’m pretty good at station surfing and can almost guarantee that before the day is over, I am going to hear the “Click it or Ticket” commercial. It’s nothing big or fancy but just a nice reminder to buckle up or pay the price. Many people are stubborn, refusing to wear their seat belt and I would hope that they are more cautious with their children than they are with their own safety. The majority of parents go the extra mile to make sure their kids are safe but the lack of car safety facts could be dangerous. Parents need to make sure their child’s car seat is installed properly. Every year, an estimated 975 child occupants under 14 years of age die from being in a car accident.
Some of the deadliest mistakes have been:
Not properly strapping your child in their car seat.
Allowing your child to ride in the front seat.
Booster seat misuse.
Loose vehicle seat belt attachment to car seat.
Loose harness straps securing child to car seat.
Here are some important car safety tips:
Your child’s car seat must be the right size for his/her weight and height.
The car seat MUST be properly installed.
Infants and toddlers should ride rear-facing until they are 2 or when they reach the highest weight + height allowed by manufacturer.
If you can move the car seat at the base, it’s not tight enough.
