That's not what they say on the news!

It's funny, but the longer I'm in real estate the more I realize the "old timers" who had the simplest advice were the most accurate with ways to be successful in this business.  Like talking shop while out in public.  Everyone has heard that while were out we should talk about Real Estate and what it's doing in our markets.  Well, I finally realized why.

Last week I was in the chair at my Barber.  My Barber is a semi-retired Realtor who works for a "rival" firm and has pretty much become a referral agent to a team he's created.  His true passion is cutting hair, so that's what he does now, but he's still in tune with real estate & carries on good conversation when I'm in the mood to talk shop. 

So while in the full Barber shop as soon as I sat down he asked how business was.  I told him I had four deals close in June & one in July.  So I couldn't complain too much about things and I reciprocated by asking him how things were.  His people also had an outstanding June and July was building toward an excellent August.  Well, with both of us having such success in June seemed to spark some controversy amongst those waiting to have their hair cut.  Since all we have heard on the news was about how terrible June was in Real Estate.

The long and short of it is, the "gallery" was shocked and amazed that we both had great months in June & they learned that the top three firms in Kansas City all had record months in June.  So they started to realize that maybe the news wasn't the best place to get information on Real Estate after all.  One gentleman even said he'd advice his daughter to get back out & looking for a house to buy. He had told her to quit the search since things were so dismal figuring another year would go by before the prices would bottom out.  

Whether we're at bottom or not, just talking shop in the barber shop inspired someone to get his daughter back in the market.  We, the local Realtors are the experts, not our local anchor person on the news.  Or worse yet, a national news pundit.  We need to get out there and make our voices heard, become the expert in your neck of the woods!!

I agree that talking shop in public really works. I've had people come up to me and ask me questions once they learn I'm in real estate. It's a great opportunity to get a business card in their hands. I also agree that this summer has been great. We are seeing more buyer activity and one agent in our office is selling higher end homes. Up until this summer, the higher end homes haven't been moving.

So true.  People are always shocked to hear that real estate is still moving on...  Guess the media needs to ask those who actually know what IS happening rather then report what someone THINKS is happening.

You are correct, when talking about our business in public settings it can also generate some additonal buisness from a total stranger.  One old school thought, always wear your name tag out in public, you would be surprised how many people will look at your name badge and start talking about real estate which could lead to a new client.
