"We're Hanging Art Today!" Tips From A Home Stager
Mike and I were enjoying our Saturday morning family walk with Bogart and Rocky. This is a nice quiet time when we review our plans for the weekend.
Julie: "I'm going to Joy's today. We're looking at some carpets and then we're hanging art."
Mike: "Is that her husband?"

Here are some tips for hanging artwork:
- Use the right tools. Have a tape measure, hammer, small step ladder, and level on hand. Be sure to use proper hardware for hanging framed art, not plain nails. Protect the walls as well as the art! You can find a great selection from ooks at most hardware stores. They are rated by weight; I usually use one size larger than recommended. For large pieces, you should use two hooks.
- For large pieces or arrangements over a sofa or casegoods, place it 4 - 8" above the top of the piece. Too high, and the art won't seem grounded to the furniture.
- Measure twice, hammer once.
- For groupings, try different layouts on top of newspaper laid out on the floor. If you like what you see, trace around each piece, tape the paper on the wall, and hammer in the hooks right through the paper.
- Keep a standard space between each piece of art, 2" or so.
- In groupings, hang larger pieces above smaller ones to keep them from visually "flying away".
- Consider what else will be part of the vignette. For example, if you're hanging a large painting above a console, you may want to hang it off-center to accommodate a lamp.
