With windstorm premiums skyrocketing, the Florida Office of Insurance Regulation (FLOIR) had the opportunity to push through legislation mandating insurance carriers to make available significant discounts for homes in which certain construction features lend in making the structure less vulnerable to windstorm damage and loss.
The mood behind this legislation was, why should homeowners have to pay more in premiums if their home is less risk to the insurance carrier. A stucture built after the 1994 changes in Florida Building Code (FBC) is less likely to sustain serious damage due to tropical storm and hurricane force winds and wind driven rain.
"Our clients are saving thousands a year in windstorm premiums," stated David Manley, owner, Gold Coast Inspections of Coral Springs, "a twenty minute, $115.00 inspection can save homeowners in as much as 40% of their windstorm premium."
Looking at the FLOIR website, insurance carriers offer anywhere between 19-56 percent discount for these construction features. In fact, even older homes qualify for some discount. "The single largest issue is that most homeowners don't know is these discounts exist." Mr. Manley states, "We polled 900 clients over the last six months and were amazed at over 80 percent weren't told by their insurance agent until they called to complain about the premium increases. These discounts have been available for years."
