The highlight of the Debt Ceiling Debate - Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords!  With all the rancor and manipulation of the last few months over the debt ceiling, the nations's spending and eliminating tax loopholes, it was incredible to see Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords enter the House of Representatives to cast her vote. The 10 minute standard ovation that has been discussed at length today and the tears in the eyes of Members of Congress and even the press covering the vore was something extraordinary to witness.Washington Post Photo of Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords

As we have seen over the last 8 months "Gabby" Giffords is beloved by the people in her Tucson congressional district - people of all philosophies and politicial affilliations. Apparently Ms. Giffords is also loved by her colleagues in the House of Representatives as well.

Gabby Giffords is the epitome of courage and grace. May her example and her pure "grit" encourage and exhort us all to be the best we can be and to live and work for the betterment of our ourselves, our families, and our country.

Also, as we applaud Gabby Giffords wonderful achievement this week and root for her continued recovery, may we remember the other victims who were injured and lost in that tragic event. May we all work to restore civility in our cities, towns and political discourse. And may we not wait until the fragile among us do something reckless and tragic before we reach out to help or get help for them!

The highlight of the Debt Ceiling Debate - Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords  Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Hi Anne - That was probably the only real high point to come out of this whole mess - it was great to see her there and know that her recovery is on track.

Anne, when one thinks of the adversities in life some have to deal with...don't we all put things in a better perspective!

Dick: I am sure she has a long way to go, but was delighted to see her.

Karen: She could teach us all a few lessons. Can't imagine what she goes through!

Ginny: We all have much to be thankful for. The economy will get better and life will go on. We need to be civil. This nonsense on television is so upsetting and then it filters down to our homes, families and places of business. We can and should agree to disagree and then move forward and create an example for our young people and anyone on the fringes.

As someone who lives with a traumatic brain injury, I am so glad she is conquering some hurdles.  However, it is a bit soon to know the depth and scope of her cognitive deficits to know whether she really should have cast a vote on such an important issue as a representative of the people in Tucson.

Many deficits appear at a much later date and can involve memory, processing, logical sequence, executive function skills and a whole host of other issues.  Her vote, though I don't live in Tucson, concerns me.  One never recovers from a TBI, one learns to live with the limitations and the reinvention of oneself.  Those deficits are permanent for the most part.  PT can help with the physical limitations as well as OT, but retraining the brain is another issue.
