Maybe Harry Reid, Barbara Boxer, Jay Rockefeller & Others Need to Read the Bill Before They Demogogue the Republicans for Something That Isn't In It

By
Real Estate Agent with Retired

Before recessing, and after passing the Debt Ceiling bill, the House of Representatives passed a bill providing for another short term extension of the FAA Taxes and Trust Fund. Reid did not allow the bill to come to the floor for a vote and now there are 4000 FAA employees on furlough until after Labor Day (at the earliest), approximately 70000 construction workers off of FAA projects and a projected short fall of taxes (on the sale of airline tickets) of over $1.2 billion.

Reid, and the rest of the dems, are accusing the republicans of being anti-labor and adding anti-labor provisions to the bill. Reid is also accusing Delta Airlines for encouraging the republicans to over turn a new labor rule that would all but guarentee unionization of it flight attendants, even though in every vote, those same flight attendants have rejected unionization.

However, there is no such language in the bill!  The only provision placed in the bill is for the taxpayers to stop subsidizing ticket prices, at small regional airports, by $1000 or more. Yes, one of those airports that would lose the subsidy is here, but, why should taxpayers pay $1000 so that I can fly to Atlanta for less than $100. Unfortunately, it still provides for subsidizies that are $999.99 and lower.

So Harry and Barbara and Jay and others were willing to go on their 5 week paid break, while almost 75,000 are forced into a period even longer of non-paid unemployment, all so they could use hyperbole and demagoguery against the opposing party. And that doesn't even address the other jobs that might be affected, in stores, restaurants, etc. It doesn't consider that many might have their credit ratings damaged and be forced to pay higher interest rates. All so Harry et al can continue their attack on those that have opposing viewpoints.

Come on America. Even the most far left liberal can see that Reid is more than willing to put ideology ahead of the well being of Americans. Come on Harry. If you refuse to read, at least hire some aids that can. Or maybe have one or your senate interns read it.

And when someone asks you, Harry, where are the jobs you promised, you can take credit for losing 74,000 of them.

And now the White House, Reid & Boxer are challenging reporters, especially ABC's John Karl, for questioning why they are attacking something not in the bill. Boxer even states the question has a certain "naivete". They would rather accuse the opposition party with a lie than put almost 75000 people back to work.

I consider it treason that they punish these workers while they take a vacation.

Mike,

I spent 22 of the last 25 years in Nevada. I've yet to determin Harry Reed's ideology, unless "Anti-Americanism" is and it may well be, a free standing  make that stand alone ideology.

I don't know, but suspect he's been mad at the world since they out lawed brothels in Search Light.

Mike, remember, Democrats don't read bills, they just sign them.  And the taxes, the government is entitled to the taxes regardless.  The tax is different from the subsidy.  Ask the IRS.

They have never cared about the taxpayer, the union member or the citizen They only care about getting re-elected and to get re-elected they have to pay someone off. In this case it is the unions.

Funny...a Republican attaches a last minute amendment to the bill that they know will not pass the Senate and you guys want to blame the Dems for it...even Kay Bailey Hutchinson has called for a 'clean' funding bill for the FAA.

Read the bill Mike?  When does that happen?  No matter the bill, start blaming.

I think it's Bush's fault, but that is just me...

(Reagan was probably really proud to pass that Blame Mantel to Bush)

HRG - hmmm, eliminate subsidies and lower taxes, to much common sense for it to happen

Than - some actually believe that they are being philanthropic

Karl - you are totally avoiding the fact that Reid, et al, are lying through there teeth to the American public. And for a couple of wasted subsidies have cause almost 75000 workers to go without paychecks for over a month.

Steve - thanks, and thanks for the feature

Rich - I agree. The user should pay the lion's share of the cost, if not all. Other taxpayers should not pay for someone else's convenience.

William - it congress, what would you expect?

Jay - but lets blame the republicans for wanting to control spending,

Georgia - and it wasn't the first time. Sadly, once upon a time I like Boxer.

As I said, the full funding bill was passed by the Senate in February.  The House version contained language meant to reverse an NMB rule that union-organizing elections should be decided by a simple majority of those who vote. They want to revert to a decades-old rule that stipulates that in airline elections, eligible voters who don’t cast a ballot be counted as voting “no.”

Last month, in comments to the House Rules Committee and separately to reporters, Mica said the labor provision was the only issue standing in the way of the House and Senate reaching an agreement on a long-term FAA bill. He said Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., has refused to negotiate with Republicans on the issue.

"There is only one issue — have I not been clear? It's up to Mr. Reid," Mica told the committee. He added that including the subsidy cuts to the extension bill "forces the Senate's hand to act."

This is poltics, pure and simple, by the Tea Partiers costing 70,00 people thier jobs!!!

Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison of Texas, the senior Senate GOP negotiator on the FAA bill, called Mica's inclusion of the subsidy cuts in the extension bill a "procedural hand grenade."

Karl - again, we are talking the extension bill, which includes no language regarding unions whatsoever. It doesn' matter what Hutchinson stated, Reid is lying about the contents of this bill and holding almost 75000 jobs hostage to his lies.

Karl, there are a hundred thousand stupid-spending things like these three airports that ought to go by the wayside.

This whole thing started because Rockefeller wanted a break because HE is more than 90 miles from one little airport.  And that's ONE of his houses.  Rockefeller needs a break?  Really?

Playing politics?  Gee, nobody plays politics anymore, what are these guys thinking?  And unions always get paid back for downtime.  Think paid vacation.

Get real...

Again, here's what Mica said; "Yes, I did work with our leadership to find some pressure points (the subsidies) to get leverage on the (long-term) bill."

So, it's really about removing the subsidy as a bargaining chip over the union issue.  Like I said, pure politics. I have no problem with 'playing politics' but let's make sure we identify this ploy for what it is.

And how do you identify Rockefeller, Reid and Boxer's ploy, as the original point of this post?  I think it was about demagoguing something that wasn't in the bill?

You cut and pasted a bunch of news stories, but you still haven't mentioned the original point of the post.

So, how do you identify that ploy?  I think Mike identifies it as a lie.

I wanted to make sure I got the quotes right.  The dems mentioned above, rightfully, call this a fight over union rights...as did Republican Senator Orrin Hatch.  The point of adding the subsidy amendment to the extension was to put more pressure on the dems position on the airline unions....as Mica himself admitted.
