Lodging revenue is the best indicator of tourism growth, and this year GulfShoresandOrangeBeach Tourism reported that spring 2011 brought in more than $64.9 million in lodging rentals. That is 13% higher than the record set in 2007!
One of the kick-off events for our spring tourism season is the Hangout Music Fest. (I wrote about the musicfestival in February.) This year Hangout Music Fest was sold out with crowds of 35,000 daily. The promoter of the festival, local businessman Shaul Zislin, stated that it was, "an absolutely windfall year."
Gulf Shores Councilman Steve Jones, feels that positive media focusing on GulfShores' success in restoring the area to a level better than it was before the oil spill combined with our perfect spring weather, were both factors in the huge increase in tourism numbers. People are anxious to get back to the beautiful waters and white sand of Gulf Shores and Orange Beach.
"2011 will be the best year ever!" states Orange Beach Mayor, Tony Kennon. All indicators are that the trend begun this spring will continue throughout the year. In addition to the huge increase in lodging revenues, this spring's retail sales totaled $167.7 million.
The very positive trend in 2011 tourism numbers is a salute to the resiliency of Gulf Shores and OrangeBeach and their commitment to high standards in restoring the area. It is also a testimony to the loyalty of regular visitors to the area and to the many new visitors who were attracted through increased marketing efforts of our local hospitality industry. Videos such as thisone, as well as other promotions, highlighted the natural beauty, events, and attractions of Gulf Shores and Orange Beach.
Former Alabama Head Football Coach, Gene Stallings, and Former Auburn Head Football Coach, Pat Dye, are getting in on the Gulf Shores and Orange Beach tourism action! They just shot a commercial for the local area as part of the new partnership between Gulf Shores and Orange Beach Tourism and the Southeastern Conference.
