Interview With A Realtor

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with Lizette Realty - Richmond KY 205403

I bet you thought I was going to write about Vampires since it is so close to Halloween!

Actually, I was contacted the other day to be interviewed for a story that is to be used for Kentucky high school students to research different careers. A Realtor was one that had been voted on by teachers to learn more about. I was honored that they had picked me for an interview!

So...I was invited to talk about the steps I took to become a Realtor in Central Kentucky. What classes or studies were involved, how long the classes were, things I might have studied in high school, what I enjoy about my career, etc.

Seriously, I wish I had been pointed this direction earlier in my life. I was not pushed to become anything! My parents didn't see my brilliance in a certain area and seek extra training for me. Left adrift...I believed I would be an artist. I had minimal formal training but I think of myself more as an artist that has become a Realtor.

At the end of the interview I was asked what two things I would say were extremely important in conducting my life as a Realtor. My answer off the cuff was:

1. Computer

2. Kindness

Now, I could think of a few more, but I know I would be lost without my computer. That contraption is totally how I function in my world for research and to stay in touch with everyone. Kindness is a part of how I deal with the pressure and negotiations involved on a daily basis. There are times I don't want to be kind. Then there is that little voice that reminds me that if I can just keep my cool for a minute or two the mean words I am thinking of flinging on someone will evaporate. (Most times this works! lol) I know I can keep the deal a deal till closing by being kind.

How many of you knew in high school that you were going to study to be in Real Estate now? I wasted a lot of time but I got here as soon as I could! How about you?

Ginger - That would be cool! I know it would have helped in my decision making.

Neal - Are you trying to confuse me too?

Randy - That would be a great class to take. Another might be social etiquette since most kids eat fast food these days. I remember my Mom taking me to "Charm School" where we were taught how to conduct ourselves at dinner. I remember that stuff to this day.

Laura - If the computer went away we all may get along better. Good point!

Allen - Isn't that funny? She was exactly right in pointing you the right direction. See...you never did forget what she said and you made it happen!

Lizette, computer came first for us. That was already in place before we started. Kindness for me grows as we go along. My brother always had it in spades. There is a lot of tension in this market, and only kindness is going to get us through it. Though the computer skills we have really helps us get the message out to the market.

Lizette-

What an awesome compliment.  I'm sure there are many great realtors in Lexington,  but to be the chosen one to speak before such impressionable minds what an honor,  congratulations. It's always nice to hear when one gives freely of themselves,  definitely speaks to your kindness.

I Could not function without my computer.   I was thinking of the fruitages of the spirit and think all could be applied as necessities especially  mildness,  and more often self-control (LOL).

Lizette,  I actually talked for years of becoming a Realtor however there was always something holding me back.  I finally decided that if I waited for the "perfect time" I would NEVER make the move.  So... I finally jumped in and have never looked back.  Wonderful post, thanks for sharing and congrats on the Feature!

All the Best,

Hello Lizette. I wish I had studied to be a realtor in high school because I feel like this is the first time in my life I am doing what I was meant to.  Of course I had to go through struggles in life to prepare me for this career. I would have not been ready in high school. I did not have the determination or perserverance.

Kindness is part of my character anyway, so that it not hard for me. I do think you have to be very self-motivated in this business also.

Therese - Good for you! It's hard to figure out if there is a perfect time for anything. Once you set the wheels in motion everything should just flow if it was meant to be. Good luck to you!!

Vickie- Wouldn't that have been easier if it had been a class? I did have a journalism class I took that I felt I was awful in. I didn't think I could write anything. Maybe it is just where we are at the time. All things come to us when we are ready for them.

Hi Lizette:  Hmmm... Realtors and Vampires.  You know, there are some similarities.  Some days, quite a few... especially towards the end of the month when you are trying to get stubborn sales to close.

In college, I prepared to be a junior high school teacher.  I did that for nine years, and then began my real estate career.  Honestly and Truly... the two careers are extremely similar.

Hello, Lizette. I am with you and Sally. I believe "to everything there is a season". I also believe that every single skill I have picked up along the way will at some time in my Real Estate Career--prove to be valuable. Actually, I would not trade-in the experiences I had in other lifetimes, even if a couple of more years in real estate would prove to be an advantage.

Over the years, across work in insurance, advertising, casinos and family restaurant business--I have had the most wonderful experiences with people. Icing on the cake--since entering real estate I have discovered a talent in photography I never knew I had. :-)

Lizette,

I wish I could have known to become a Mortgage Professional many years in my youth. I have only been in the mortgage industry for 14 years and before that in the apparel business as a rep for 3 different companies. I love what I do and enjoyed your blog. I am also a person who  loves Kentucky and goes every year to the Derby for 33 years. WWHHHOOOOO!

Karen, Yes, I too have seen a few Vampires in this business. Luckily I have a few spells to keep them at bay.

Suzi - You are right! All these jobs and careers we had previously really prepared us for what we do now. I used to love taking pics with my Minolta Magnum.I have a huge box of albums in my Mom's attic.  I finally sold it on eBay.  Now I work everyday with the digital and rarely print them. Kinda sad...

Keith - Thanks for reading my blog! The Derby Rocks! The last time I was over there at Churchill I watched the Rolling Stones.(Over a year ago) That was the first time there had ever been a concert there.

Computers and Kindness are a very good place to star Lizette. Especially kindness toward buyers, sellers and other agents. I find the first two most people have mastered, the last, not so much.

My husband kept telling me to "try it...you'd be good at that."  We also knew it would allow me to be "Mommy" first and continue to do all the fun stuff with the kids as well as getting back into the working world.

Over the years... I have always felt an emptiness that could only be filled by giving back.  It is funny... or maybe ironic is a better word... but the more you think about yourself... the more your "self" disappears.  The more you give back to others... the more you begin to really live.

Susie! I don't know how you get it all done. It has to be hard to work our business and have kids and all their events to deal with. You are SuperWoman!

Karen - You are sooo right! I also enjoy helping others when I can! Have a great week!
