All For The Sake Of Progress? - Taking Time To Question The Motives Of Others

A year ago we happened to be driving through Woodstock, Ontario on Easter Sunday, on our way to visit my sister in nearby Shakespeare, Ontario for Easter dinner.  We ended up taking a wrong turn in Woodstock and came across what was left of a beautiful turn of the century Church.

Only the front wall was still standing in what had been St. Mary's Catholic Church.  After doing a little research I found out the property had been sold and the front of the Church had been preserved and was to be incorporated into a senior's home to be built on the property.

Little did I know at the time that a year later I would be living only 15 minutes away from Woodstock, in Tavistock.  I recently drove around Woodstock trying to locate the property again and to see if there had been any further progress on the site.

Nothing had changed since my last visit.  The beautiful facade remains with perhaps a bit of deterioration.  The fence around the Church remains but there is no sign of activity.

I felt very sad when I came across a photo of the whole Church as it looked prior to demolition.  A fellow member of Flickr had taken some shots of the abandoned Church before demolition occurred.  I've included that photo by Phrenzee below.

I have a hard time seeing historic buildings destroyed.  While I applaud the intent of the retirement home to incorporate the front of St. Mary's into their plans, I wonder when this will ever happen.  The longer the structure sits as is, the more it will deteriorate, perhaps to the point that the developer may nix their original plans.

This is all speculation on my part as I have no information to prove me right or wrong, only that over a year has gone by since I noticed this grand old structure and I have no idea how long before that, it had been demolished.

Today I'd just like to share the beauty of this once fine gathering place and I hope that it does survive in another form to be enjoyed and admired.

Hi Jenny...you're getting to be a great shutter bug, you must have some passion for talking photos...Yes it's sad to see a historic church like this one disappear. At least you have captured her in time with these photos

Hi Jenny - It is sad to see historic buildings demolished.  A couple of decades ago, Markham set aside some land where historic houses could be, and have been moved to, so that people could live in them.  There are a number of rules regarding fixing the houses to reflect historical character, there are limits on what the owners can do etc.  It has proved to be a very valuable addition to Markham.

Jenny - I often find it heartbreaking to see wonderful old landmarks demolished for something that is supposed to be new and better.  Sacramento had a majestic movie theatre called the Alhambra.  It looked more like a palace with wonderful gardens and fountains, than a theater.  But it was torn down to build a Safeway grocery store a couple of decades ago.  Many in our city, never quite got over it!

Thanks Mary, yes it sure was a handsome Church.  Very sad.

Hi Fred, I do love taking photos.  I never did until I started blogging on Active Rain and had to start taking them for my posts.  Now I'm hooked.

Hi Mark, you must have some forward thinkers in Markham.  There are restrictions for updating historic homes in Oakville also.  Not so much to the inside but to the exterior.

Hi Myrl, How sad that the Alhambra is now a grocery store.  Very, very sad.  What are people thinking?

Jenny, I can't believe such a beautiful church was torn down.  The front that was left behind looks so lonely now.

How sad to see such a beautiful building get lost forever. I hope that they do at least preserve the front and not find an excuse to tear that down too.

Jenny,

I thought the church looked in fairly good condition from the outside from that Flickr picture.  I can't believe it was torn down except for the small  entry portion!  I suspect it will be harder for them to do so in the future with a new sheriff in town!

Jenny, I too hate to see old historic structures destroyed...in my opinion those older buildings had character and weren't designed to be throwaway....many of them had an inherent craftsman quality which is now replaced by "designer" buildings.
