I remember when I was looking for colleges way back when. It was difficult to find one that really suited me, AND to find time to go out and do these things. Now the town of Cary, NC is getting involved! This is an awesome opportunity and I hope that everyone tells their child and takes advantage of this awesome offer.
Be honest, have your children started looking into what colleges interest them? What about the next step, actually going to visit them? It may not seem like that big of a deal to them, but they're looking into the University they are going to be staying at for four years. They need to make sure that they like the feel of the campus and can find it a place they wouldn’t mind coming back to each year. One of the girls that works for me said that she had heard so many things about this one University. Everyone talked about how great the education you got was and the set up being just right. But after her campus tour, she didn’t like it much at all. Not that the programs were bad or anything. The feel she got on campus just wasn’t what she was looking for.
If you have a child that is a rising sophomore, junior, or senior, it is not too early to begin to look at college. Sophomore year – do some research on what field they'd would like to go in and the schools that are best known for their classes in that area. Junior year – plan the tours so that they can get an idea of where you would like to apply. Summer before senior year – look into scholarships and applications. It may seem like a lot of work, especially if they don’t know what they want to do with their lives, but it is best to start looking now before you and your children have to cram it all into their senior year.
