Community Spotlight: Historic Relay in Halethorpe, MD

By
Real Estate Agent with Thompson Company, REALTORS® 240.593.2860 MD594797

Historic Relay is a Baltimore County, MD neighborhood, situated right across the county line from Howard off of Route 1. It is nestled in between the 895, 195 and 95.

Granted, nestled may seem like an odd word choice but once you visit the neighborhood you will know what I mean. It’s a secluded area boasting its “own” entrance (by proximity) to Patapsco Valley State Park – as a matter of fact you’ll see residents riding their bikes to the park quite often. Its closeness to major routes is an asset, not a draw-back, making it a convenient location for anyone working in the Baltimore Metro area, at NSA or Fort Meade. It is also just within minutes of both the Relay and Halethorpe Marc Train Stations and close to UMBC.

Historic Relay has been a designated historic district since 1996 which is proudly displayed throughout the neighborhood. It is a quaint community with a charming neighborhood feel and pride of home ownership is evident on every street. It is still a neighborhood in transition which means many homes have been lovingly restored but there are also others that are still waiting for their charm to be brought out and to shine in their old glory.

Just to show you that Relay is the essence of a true neighborhood, new residents are welcomed to the community with a basket full of goodies and an official mentioning in the community newsletter. Every September the residents celebrate their community with a Relay-Day, a children’s Halloween party is held every October and in December some homes are opened to the public for a Holiday House Tour.

Homes for sale in this historic neighborhood do not exactly flood the market - and that is a good thing. As a matter of fact many of the residents stay put for decades or generations, which is a testament in its own. During the last 365 days only 5 homes were offered for sale, 4 of which sold. Currently there is one center-hall colonial for sale, offered at $500,000. It was built in 1940 and sits on 1.72 acres!

If you are considering purchasing a home in one of Maryland’s historic neighborhoods, you may just want to put Relay on your watch list! Curious what is currently for sale in historic Relay? Click here or call me at 240.593.2860.

Very nice.  I love historical homes and all that they bring to their owners.  I am glad to see Maryland has a Historical Element in their General Plan.

Hi Cliff: I do, too. Our first home was a historic one in Chesapeake, VA. Thank you for stopping by.

Cheryl: thanks! It's one of those neighborhoods that I would love to be part of. I wish I had known about it a few years ago.

Jerry: I'm not exactly sure how the Gold Star happened but I'm not complaining! Thank you!

Hi Maggie, when visiting one you get to admire history and when living there you are part of a community!

Hi Lisa & Robert, thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it. I'll be going up to NJ - Cape May next week, I have heard so much about it, I can't wait to see it. It sounds like my kind of town.

Mike: thank you! I really like the local posts a lot, too, you've done quite a few nice ones! So much to learn ...

Michael: Thank you. Yes, in my opinion it is.. and it is just one of many historic and quaint communities in Central MD.

Hi Andrea,

Central Maryland has some excellent, beautiful areas - I'm sure Historic Relay is among them.

Your post reminds me a little of Portland, Maine's Munjoy Hill neighborhood - a great community with some fully restored areas and others that are waiting for the same.

Andrea, it's always great to see a localism post featured. They are such an important part of AR but rarely receive that coveted status. Very nicely done.

Hi John, thanks for your comment! I have a friend who just relocated to Portland from Berkeley, CA.. I'll have to keep you in mind in case they put down permanent roots and are looking to buy.

Larry: it was definitely very nice to see that it received the feature. Thanks for stopping by.

Hi, Andrea -- it looks like a very cool place to have a home.  Currently in my home market, there has been increasing interest in living within the older, 'historic' neighborhoods in places like downtown Phoenix and Mesa.  (Or course, 'historic' means different things in differnet markets!)  Hope you are having a great week, Eric

It is Eric, and I can't tell you how much my heart is aching for one of the jewels-in-the-rough and I always wonder, if those walls could talk ...! If charm and character is high on one's wish list, then a historic district is the way to go.
