Pay It Forward - 110th Family Reunion

Real Estate Agent with Keller Williams Indy NE 317-290-7775

This entire week was spent going the extra mile for my mom...and her ancestors.  What I didn't expect is that I would walk away wanting to go again next year.

I mean why would I want to drive three hours to a difficult to find location (where they drive horse and buggies through town??) to spend three hours with people that are old and I don't know....

But it was my mom's year to host...ArtleyPostcard

My husband and I created a BINGO game using the original 12 children of George and Susan Artley (who started these reunions in 1902!).  Rather than B-I-N-G-O they were Margaret Emma or Julie Ida or Jacob Beeber, etc and then random numbers.  And instead of calling out BINGO; you called out Artley!  And if you won; you got a silverware set engraved with 110th Artley Reunion on them...(gifts from Tim and I).  I haven't had that much fun in a really long time!

And because my family was hosting (mostly me) I checked everyone in and got to really meet them and talk to them.  And the more I met, the more I became intrigued and interested in not only the lives of the folks back then but their lives.  Who knew...that by looking back; I would be looking forward to another year with these people...  I didn't think about real estate the entire day; just lived in the moment.

It brought a renewed sense of family...and watching my mom take it all in was a prize I wasn't expecting.  Someone there took a picture of my mom, me and my daughter (three generations) and I can't wait till I find whoever that was and they send it to me!  lol

Cindy,  Wow, 110 years!  Wow!  That's pretty amazing in and of itself.  Your mom must have been thrilled.  Glad you got in on the excitement and will now carry on the tradition.

Hey, this is the tradition that tripped me up in your 2 Truths and a Lie post. What a wonderful history your family has created. Glad to see you are helping your Mom keep it going.

How awesome is that !!!    A couple years ago I went to my Granny's family reunion wiht my mom and dad...I think I was the only one from my generation there of my 14 first cousins....but it was a blast!  and so fun to see and learn about the family!   Granny , who passed this year, was the only one of 12 who was still living....she wasn't at the reunion...with her Alzheimers it would have been too much!   Many of her nieces and nephews were her age!  LOL

My husband's family has been doing reunions every year since the 30's or 40's!    AlWAYS THE  same weekend every was fun to meet that side of the family!

My sister and I were just saying how we miss our cousins....over 4th of July we had a picnic with my cousin Tim and his family who were out from Minnesota...we hadn't seen him since my gramp's funeral about 10 years ago!   he will be back next summer and we are planning a real reunion with all the cousins!    I can't wait!

Hi Kristine..she was beaming; makes my happy when my mom and my kids are happy; the rest of the world...not so

Hi Deborah...ours are always the first Saturday in August...much like your husband's family.  Makes it hard to have an excuse for a prior commitment!

Cindy, how great that you had such a fantastic time.  How creative were you with that Bingo-like game!  It sounds like the family may have a new permanent host!

oh my gosh we played BINGO at my family reunion during Memorial Day, and they called out the kids names!  I thought that was so cool!  My brother bingo'd

I grew up doing these ancestor things my Mother has a family tree back to the Mayflower, I could wallpaper my office with all the certificates of memberships I have, DAR, DAC, UDC, Mayflower, Dames of Court of Honor.  I delegated the family tree and history box to my sister several years ago!
