My Mini-Vacation

Last week I decided to just get away from it all. Living in the middle of a disaster area, having lost my home, my office, my investment property, and much of our personal belongings, it's been hard to concentrate on much of anything other then the flood that took all of it away.

We choose to drive the 2002 Taurus (our newest vehicle) because of the three vehicles it is in the most reliable condition. The AC is out in the RealMan Grand Caravan plus the driver side window no longer works and we were in the midst of a heat wave last week. The 1999 Kia has so many small problems that I never go more then 50 miles out of town with it (but I really like the car).

We loaded up the Taurus and took off... the AC died.. oh well. It was a good trip down. No whining from the kids and it only seemed to be me that need to stop along the way (to much coffee). What was really amazing is we got 28 miles to the gallon on the way and I don't believe there was a strong wind behind us. Once in Fargo we got the AC fixed so we could have a more comfortable drive home.

So what was my excuse for making the trip? Despite all that has happened to us in the last few months I, Robert L. Timm, just can not go take a vacation because I need one, no I have to throw in something work related. Here is what I did on my Mini-Vacation:

Serengeti

With out getting lengthy about the event I just want to say what a nice guy Stefan Swanepoel is. The presentation was held in the beautiful, historic, Fargo Theater. Mr. Swanepoel is an excellent speaker and he answered every question asked of him during the presentation. He stayed after the presentation and signed books. He stayed even later and just plain visited with anyone who wished to visit. I visited with him, one on one, for about ten minutes. I told him that I was familular with him thanks to Active Rain. WOW, he is so thankful to all of us AR's he really sung our praises. It was fun!

My mini-vacation also included thrift store shopping (wish I had brought the van and a trailer), lots of dining out (time for a diet), and visiting with family, and 4 days of not answering the phone.

I liked it enough I just might have to try something like this again. I'd hate to make a habit of it though as I just took a vactaion 15 years ago.

My heart goes out to all of you in ND due to the flooding. I hope the busisness vacation was a productive one. Hang in there. I'm sure you've heard that too much, but what else can you do? Like you I haven't had a real vacation in years. I've developed a new philosophy. Now my top priority is creating family memories and photographs to document these times. I'm planning a trip away for all of us this October. The kids have a week off of school then.

That is really neat that he just opened up and gave all that personal time to the people that wanted to speak with him.  Great that you all got a few days mental and emotional break.

Debbie, spending more time with my family is number one on my list as well. We only have such a short time that they are kids. Hope you have fun on your vacation.

Gary, I really think so too. As hard as this is to handle it really has created an even stronger demand for Real Estate in our area.

Laura, it was a good break even though the flood was never really out of my thoughts.

So glad you took a moment to step back and try to get back the journey of repair and rebuild.  What a awful time in your life and I admire looking towards the future and living in the now not dwelling in the past event.  All the very best as you walk forward.

Bob, Clearly you and the family needed to get away on a well deserved time away from the disaster zone! You have not lost your sense of humor ... so glad for that!  Don't make a habbit of it and wait another 15 years to take a vacation!  You remain in my prayers!

Connie, those are very kind words and II'm not sure I am living up to them as well as I could. It all gets very frustrating.

Thanks Kathleen! It is very comforting to know I am in your prayers. I hope I don't lose the sense of humor, there is a lot of anger around here over the situation.

Rose, I am seriously thinking about a trip to TX this winter. I'd love to visit you and Barbara Hensley if I do.

Great read! and Mr. Swanepoell is from the OC~ I still need to make one of his events as we had one at our Women's Council of Realtors and did not get to make it.

Take care and here's good vibes your way........ ;)

Bob - good morning!  I enjoyed reading this and am thankful that you took your mini-vacation, with a little work stuff thrown in....but....the real enjoyment was seeing that you have not lost your sense of humor that has always been in your writing.

HI BOB!  The best vacations start with your family - the hurdles in the middle - become the things you laugh at later.  We can all learn a lesson from your hurdles and how to make the best of it!  You are a hero to many!

Lauren, Thanks for those good vibes! Mr. Swanepoell was a very interesting person to meet and fun to listen to. I do hope to do a little more vacationing, more often, maybe even annually.

Barbara, I don't know why it is so hard for me to take time as I see other successful Realtors take several weeks a year off. I find it hard to take a half day off.

Gabrielle, you are way to kind!

Bob, glad you got out and had some fun!  And better yet, you didn't have to answer the phone for 4 days!

Do you remember what it's like to have a life now? :)

Jeremy, it was incredibly hard ignoring that phone. Fun was involved but I sure would have liked more of it!

Bob, I bet it was!  I'm going to try to ignore my phone all next week when I'm on vacation!

And the fun always seem to end to soon!  But I guess that's what keeps us going, as too much fun can be a terrible life (just look at rock stars!).

Jeremy, to quote one of my favorite Rock Stars "There is a whole lotta things I've never done and I've never had to much fun" George Thorogood and The Destroyers. Gotta love their "Bad To The Bone".

Well, glad he hasn't.  :)  But yes, I never tire of fun either!  Just boredom or doing too much work!
