Tools for Schools

Oringinally Posted on on 7/20/2011:

Today’s blog isn’t just about the home, but about helping those homes in need. Each year, Alachua County, Florida (where we’re headquartered!) sponsors “Tools for Schools,” a completely donation-based collections drive to help teachers and students for the upcoming school year. Businesses and individuals alike provide new or gently used school supplies that will be given to teachers free of charge.

Many people don’t realize how much money teachers actually spend on their classrooms and students. In the 2009-2010 school year, teachers in the United States spent more than $1.3 billion out of pocket for various materials. Tools for Schools takes some of the pressure off their wallets and lets them get back to doing what they love: teaching. This also helps out disadvantaged students whose parents could be having a hard time providing supplies for their children due to the economy or countless other reasons. With classroom needs actually being in the classroom, students have a clearer path to succeed.

The program accepts all sorts of goods, from office and art supplies, to educational decorations for classrooms, to science materials like rock and mineral collections. Last year, more than 450 Florida businesses donated and over 300,000 students and 11,000 teachers throughout Florida felt the support. An added benefit to the collection of these goods is the amount of recycling taking place and the prevention of more resources being depleted. Not only are students and teachers feeling relief, but so is the environment.

Kids on Bus before School When people are in need, we know it’s time to step up. To show our support, Emmer Development Corp. and Gibraltar Title Insurance Agency, Inc. are working together to provide drop off points for the goods at a few locations in Gainesville: the office of Gibraltar Title Insurance Agency/our headquarters at the Emmer Group hub, the clubhouse at our Sorrento neighborhood and the sales office at our Portofino neighborhood. Another way we're contributing is through local realtors: every time you show an EDC new home, we'll donate $10 dollars to the drive! The drive ends August 19, 2011, and we’d love to see you come out and participate in this supportive community endeavor, so please feel free to stop by and be a Good Samaritan. We promise, it feels good to give!

Don’t live in the area? Share with us your local school-supportive charities and let those around you know how to participate!

Christina- Thanks for reading! All the little things in the classroom add up and people don't realize that it's more than likely being taken care of by the teacher, who has so much else on their plates. We're just glad to be able to bring this opportunity to the community!

This is a great program.  I will need to get some supplied to the GACAR office.  It's great to give back to our great Gainesville community!
