WHAT DOES THE VENUE OF VIOLENCE IN LONDON HAVE TO DO WITH US??....The same Social Media Phenomenon  May Already Be Here!

In London tonight, there were interviews of some these young thugs who are creating the awful chaos in the streets in several cities in Briton.  What is the reason they are doing this? "We want our taxes back"...says one woman: "It's the rich that are causing this---we want to show the rich that we can do anything we want to do!"...and:"We want the same things that others have"! These are poor people, unemployed; most of who live in a city that feeds them, clothes them and gives them free medical care....

The evening news tonight mentions that the NYPD is planning a way to track Blackberry usage in New York City, in the event that what has happened in Philadelphia starts to happen here.

I sense a rumbling of unrest here in this country with the attacks on innocent people in Philadelphia. Attacks of thuggery to beat up and rob folks just so these "Flash Mobs" can feel like they are getting their "fair share". I saw a young man get beaten and knocked to the ground--when another man helped him up and 4 others came and joined him in robbing the young, bleeding man of anything of value in his backpack!!! Is this a symptom of what happens when the "Socialization" of America unfolds? Can we expect this to spread across the country much like it is spreading in England?

The challenge in all of this is how to try to stop or end or control these mobs of youthful thugs when they have a way of gathering at the drop of a hat via texting on Twitter--plan a place to meet, meet and go after the innocent (or the rich) for what ever you can get!!! The VENUE OF VIOLENCE is a social media phenomenon.

Because of the freedom and lack of "laws" surrounding the internet and social media, we are watching as the whole package of technology and Twitter (and other social websites) open up a venue for violence that we have no way to predict or to manage.

IS ANYONE ELSE WATCHING THIS UNFOLD? I wrote a post 2 nights ago and I have added it right here in case you missed it...

RIOTS, REVOLUTIONS, FLASH MOBS ALL!....Are They ALL A Result Of The Miss-use of Social media???

This morning I was reading how the riots in London were organized through the use of Facebook and Twitter!!!   Tonight, watching the news I see that the Philadelphia Mayor has put a curfew on all teens under 18 to keep them off the street at night, after Flash Mobs, organized on social websites, were attacking people on the streets and robbing them and beating them to a pulp!!! In addition to the political unrest and the mobs--there are the personal attacks and manipulations of young people, young women especially by predators on social websites....and what about the known numerous victims of crime, murder specifically, from predators on Craigslist???

Are  these another indication of a pattern of violence that is fueled by the ability to organize through texting and using Social Networks???

In the past 2 years I have written several posts on the world of Social Networking and it's over-whelming impact on certain situations and populations of the world:

  • Dictatorships
  • Vulnerable and youthful victims
  • The poor and downtrodden
  • Addicts
  • Racial Unrest
  • Personal safety

Below are just 3 of the posts that I have written about the use of the 2 most used Social Networks:

"SOCIAL" NETWORK--NOT SO "SOCIAL"?...Is The Real Use Of FB "Social" Or Is It A "Forum Of Unrest"?

"FACEBOOK, TWITTER"...The "New" Monkey On Our Backs?...You Be The Judge!

GOOFLE AND REDFACEBOOK.....Here's Why I Think We Need To Think Twice About these Two!!!

Now, this is the 4th one and it does not look good to me; are we going to be the next victims of this "new" source of social unrest? I can sense that there is a random possibility of unrest here in America...I am not writing this to alarm people. I AM WRITING THIS TO ALERT THE PUBLIC THAT WE HAVE HAD A WARNING WITH THE LONDON RIOTS....It can happen here!

We are going through such tumultuous times that it would not take much to tumble into a real incident.

We need to be alert to this---we need to be aware of what is going on with the financial unrest taking place right now and be vigilant to those around us. Are we using our best resources to make a safe way forward in our personal financial situations?

Is there anything we can do individually to act on those things that we are not happy with in the financial realm? I think the following activities are critical right now: after all we did have a WAKE-UP CALL about 3 years ago!!!

  • Get your debts under control--Do a budget that you can follow; pay off credit cards and other forms of credit as soon as possible.
  • Organize your personal finances so that you have money (cash) in reserve for emergencies; a good amount of cash on hand is at least $1,000.00...not in the bank, but on hand!
  • Stop spending money on those things that you do not NEED!
  • Write letters to you congressman telling them how you feel about their latest activities. Ask for help, if you need it, with your mortgage.
  • Talk to your bank NOW if you are having trouble with your mortgage payments
  • Do everything in your power to be INDEPENDENT in your life--don't rely on outside help should you need it. IT WILL NOT BE THERE!

If we all do these things to make our lives less stressful, we will not be in such a bad way if we end up in another recession. What does this have to do with Facebook and Twitter?

PUTTING YOURSELF IN A POSITION OF SOME FINANCIAL INDEPENDENCE WILL KEEP YOU SAFER IN THE EVENT OF UNREST.

Paula, you are so right...this is not the time to stick your head in the sand and say 'woe is me and my biz' ...understand the power of the masses that can be orchestrated & incited...it is very possible especially in our larger metro areas that this type of unrest will happen if we do not make prudent changes in our social and economic structure...food for thought!

Ginny: I agree; we need to get our heads out of the sand and take action to make sure we do not fall victim to unrest...it is such a possible thing right now. I have heard people express such anger against the political influeces right now---we are so at the effect of the politicians that it is easy to feel dis-empowered! That's when it happens--this social unrest....

Paula, I think folks are so REACTIVE today instead of introspective.  So yes, it's not too surprising that social media is being used for abuse and violence.

Before today, the only flash mob I'd heard of were good ones, like random dancing and singing or like my post from July 4th.  That was a NICE flash mob.

Paula, society today is a shame, and perhaps there are many factors to blame! Social networking, does cause more bulling, can cause theft (when someone posts vacation plans), Lack of parental control.....so many to name. I really do count my blessings, I have such great kids, but can't say its easy or by coincidence. Its tough love and sticking to it!

Ellen: It's like an alternative universe this social media thing--the perosn who may never commit any crime in our natural world, is apt to do anything in the other universe where there are no laws!!!

Jeremy: I will take a look at the one you talk about n your post--I think I know it; I saw one that was an opera that was done in a mall with the most beautiful voices--like angels....not anything like what is happening in Phili with the flash mobs there!!

Paula, thanks for stopping by on that blog post.  Nice flash mobs are an excellent idea, and I hope their creativity and NICENESS continues.

As for the other stuff, let's hope and pray it all settles down.

Jeremy: Let's hope it all ends but I am afraid it is just starting--I heard this morning that the crowds in London and other cities there are copy cats now of the Philidelphia crowds--they are texting meeting places, gathering there and then attcaking people, looting and general mayhem. Apparently after the riots, they took over and spread it all over Great Briton! I loved the grocery store Flash Mob!!

Well, that's certainly not encouraging.  I do believe that order will be restored, especially in Britain where there isn't really a great deal of unrest in general.  At least that's been my impression!

Glad you liked the grocery store flash mob/band!  I thought it was pretty fun!

Some deep and heavy thoughts here. The only thing that will change this is when people have a "heart change". They can always find a way to get around regulations and laws. Only a heart change will make real change.

Paula, social media is an intersting thing that can be used for good or not.  I'm still wondering about just who is rioting about what in the UK.

The upheaval across the Middle East this past year was also a symptom of the growing problems that the poor are facing across the globe.  Their basic costs for food and energy and going up, and taking an ever greater share of their total income.  If we don't get our own house in order, we run the risk of seeing social acrimony on our our shores.

Jean: A "heart" change is something that these thugs are not even considering...if you saw what I saw in the news reports and read in the news papers today--you would see the same thing: A movement that could sweep the globe like it is in England--just because they can...now they are claiming some social justice is behind it!!! "It's the rich" was the cry heard from hundreds as they swept into another part of London to wreck havoc there....This is big...

Patricia: The riots gave way to the flash mobs who are made up of the young, some as young as 10 years old...all going intot the streets to meet up with more throngs oftrouble makers...now it is the "have nots" who got cell  phones for free because they are poor--now they want more and they will take it!...no plan just chaos!

Eric: In my opinion, it's the "out of work" crowd that has nothing to do but think up things like "flash mob" tactics to get more freebies...If we don't get people back to work here--and by that I mean --if we don't allow small businesses to grow and generate jobs for the masses, we will be in the same boat....right now Briton can't seem to get a handle on it; they have a huge social network that is coming down around them because they can't afford to give the poor all that they gave them in the past!!! Talk about "trained to take for free"!!!

Fred: The foodstamp program feeds 50 million people right now in this country! People who fall under the umbrella of poor are able to afford TV's, WII games and other things that the poor normally would never have. Now the government has just decided that they are giving the poor cell phones since they can't afford to buy them...would be interesting to see just when this distribution of cell phones happened and if it had anything to do with the Flash Mobs gathering in Philadelphia. It's very easy to learn to text............

Paula, Mirela is in London now. Her post on the event in London is riveting. Hopefully, our politicians will wake up and realize that all is not well in the world and work (truly work) on solving some of the same problems we have in this country.

Paula: The Philadelphia problem has been simmering for awhile. It pretty much began in the last year or so with roving young people on weekend nights. The issues have been escalating, and how now turned to violence. I am sure this is partially fueled by the bads news and lack of civility in every part of our society. Social media has not caused this, but the ability to reach more people instantaneously is certainly making the situation worse. Hopefully, the prosecution of the perpetrators will help to ease the crisis in Philadelphia. The same methods that can create a flash mob can identify suspects and lead to prosecution. Spent the first 47 years of my life in Philadelphia and have worked with Mayor Nutter on issues when he was in Council. The reach out to parents, and the punishment imposed by the courts will help, IMO, as will the return to school. Adults are scared about the future, I am sure that is communicated to their children who behave inappropriately.

Social media has changed everything. With the anarchy in Congress and everyone so willing to vilify their opponents, I have been concerned that crowds like those in the Arab world could be possible here - on every side of the issue. It's revolution when you agree with the outcome, it's social unrest when you don't.

Maria: Thank you for telling me about Mirela's post---very chilling! Let's hope and pray that does not happen here! I noticed that she was not given credit for the post --thought she would have been featured there...

Anne: Do you think it will end as school begins? Let's hope so....and let's also hope that the strains put on our social system will not open a whole new concern. Once there are people in need who can not manage, have no source of aid and they watch as others "have it all"..that is the real test. Once you can no longer fill the daily needs and more of the "needy" the "need" becomes a motivation for violence..a way to get something they can't get any other way!!!
