Woodpecker Wednesday??? Seeing Red in Montreal, Quebec

By
Education & Training

Bon mercredi de Montréal, Québec!  Happy Wednesday from Montreal, Quebec!

Last Wednesday, I was astonished to see the following scene in Montreal and in the backyard!

Woodpeckers in Montreal, Quebec, Canada

For those that regularly visited my blog during my days in Montana, I have created a group called Moose Monday on ActiveRain where photos of moose were featured and shared on Mondays.  I have actually made a few Moose Monday posts from Montreal.  Now, with the latest sighting, how about a group called Woodpecker Wednesday?  Just kidding, Wordless Wednesday is sufficient enough! But it does sound fun and it would be interesting to see and know where else in North America these wacky and wonderful red-headed woodpeckers make appearances especially on Wednesdays, doesn't it?   :-)

As I watched these two woodpeckers last Wednesday, I could not help but imagine the sound that Woody Woodpecker (see the link to his website at the bottom of this post to hear the actual sound) made as an animated cartoon I watched on TV when I was young.

One would not expect a woodpecker sighting in Montreal let alone two woodpeckers in action on a tree (they were at it for at least 15 minutes before they flew away, plenty of time for this photographer to capture some amazing pictures).  I have heard the sound of a woodpecker in the morning in Red Lodge, Montana but I have not actually seen one.  Luck had it such that I saw two of them (it gives seeing red a whole new meaning, lol) up close in a backyard in Montreal.

Here is another photo (out of the many photos I took) of the woodpeckers to leave you with.  Want to see more woodpeckers on Wednesdays?  :-)

Marc,

They may not exactly speak the same language but I do think they are relatives.  Nice post on AR and for the bird!  :-)

Myrl,

It is nice to see you too.  I wonder if the woodpecker condos in your area would be more expensive than the ones in my new area.  :-)

Stay tuned for my next post which will be a Moose Monday post!  I am still seeing moose in Montreal.   :-)

Chris,

It is like seeing an image in a miror in the second photo (the way the woodpeckers are standing across each other).  :-)

WOW Gerry you must really think VB forgot about you? I don't see your face around my groups much anymore and I am subscribed to 500 members at AR now so it's difficult to see your smiling face with "Upper Yellowstone Falls" in the background!

VB ;o)

PS - I will do my best to stop by more often and wonderful photos of red-headed woodpeckers ...

Vegas Bob,

No worries and no, I don't think you have forgotten about me.  I only make appearances once in a while on AR (so it is not you).  I appreciate it even when you make it once in a while!   :-)

Hi Mary,

Nice to see you too!   The woodpeckers sure tap tap tapped a lot the area of the tree they were on.   They were at it for a good half hour before they decided they got what they were looking for and left.   :-)

Thank you Debra.

I almost thuught they were going to cause the branch to fall out.  Luckily, they knew what they were doing.

Mike,

I wish I knew but I am not a woodpecker expert.  They sure were HUGE as I got the opportunity to observe them for quite some time that day.

Those Woodpeckers are beautiful! I really liked the second picture best, I think because it was a closer shot for me who has poor vision.

Thank you Sussie,

I also think the second photo came out a bit clearer than the first one (less glare from the sky and yes, a closer view where you can see the woodpeckers and notice the red feathers on the top of their heads better).  :)

Okay.  I did some sleuthing, and those two are Pileated Woodpeckers.  North America's largest known woodpecker!
