Sometimes even flood insurance can't save your home.

Homes in Arlington, TX which were damaged or destroyed by Tropical Storm Hermine in 2010, and eventually bought out by the city are now being demolished.  What was once aHermine flood, Arlington Texas 2010 denseneighborhood will now be greenbelt and park area with scattered homes remaining which were originally built with the finished floor elevations at a level which is above the base flood elevation.  We can only wish those remaining home owners luck in the future.

The lesson we learned here and from similar cases across the

Hermine flood, Arlington Texas 2010.

country is that flood insurance is a necessity for many properties, however in the end, if a home is destroyed and most likely going to suffer the same fate again sometime in the future, it’s best just

to bite the bullet and cut your losses.

Don’t get me wrong, I am a big advocate of flood insurance.  The NFIP is a very good program and saves thousands of people so much money every year.  Unfortunately there are a few cases annually, such as in my neighborhood with Hermine, where rebuilding is just pointless…and could even be called insane (doing the same thing over and over the same way and expecting different results).

Even though the next time it floods, it could be in 50 years, it's still best to leave it alone.

Yes, and unfortunately, Donna, this particular creek has a history of flooding on a semi regular basis.  So overall, it's good to get rid of those houses like they are doing.  Here's the saddest part though...many of those folks went ahead and rebuilt and remodeled after the flood and it was after all that when the city decided to buy them all out and demo the houses.  Sad.

Wow.... amazing that a tropical storm can have that much effect even as north as Arlington.... best of luck to those residents.

Exactly, Maggie.  Imagine how surprised we were to wake up to helicopters flying overhead to rescue people down the road from their homes.  Luckily I am in the higher part of the neighborhood but some friends lost their house.  It was definitely worse than a 100 year flood.
