School starts on August 22 for Friendswood ISD students, but this year the high school students will get to sleep in a little longer every Thursday. Beginning the second week of school, Friendswood High School students will have late arrival on Thursdays, 45 minutes later than usual, with classes starting at 9:19 a.m.
On other days of the week, students will continue to begin classes at 8:35 a.m. and will be dismissed at 3:45 p.m.
This Thursday late arrival time will allow teachers and staff to participate in professional learning communities. With the loss of the common planning period for teachers this year, due to state-wide cuts in state funding, there is little time during the day for teachers to plan together within a team to review data, make curricular improvements, and learn the new requirements of the end-of-course assessments. This 45-minute period once a week will allow teachers the time they need to plan together to best meet the needs of the students.
The state commissioner of education, Robert Scott, granted Friendswood High School this late arrival exemption because the district has maintained its EXEMPLARY rating for the third year in a row.
The FISD School Board of Trustees approved the late arrival on Thursdays each week at their regular board meeting on July 18.
Friendswood ISD has excellent schools and is one of the main reasons that home prices are stable in the Friendswood area.
