The Wild West Relay-August 12th and 13th, 2011

What is the Wild West Relay?

It’s a 200 mile Relay Race through farmland and forests, across paved and dirt roads starting in Fort Collins and ending in Steamboat Springs, CO.

The runners even run at night under the full moon.  This can be rugged territory, my friends!

Approximately 26 miles of the course travels the Red Feather Lakes Rd from the old Forks Restaurant at Hwy 287, past Ponderosa Realty to Chapel in the Pines Church in Red Feather Lakes.  For those of you who don’t know, this road climbs approximately 1000 feet in elevation  is up and down mountains with very few stretches of level land. Talk about challenging!

Last year, I thought “these folks are extremely serious runners or just plain crazy!”  ;-]

My friend, Debby Meyers is running in the Wild West Relay.   I worked with Debby at the title company, for many years.   No, she’s not running in those boots. The title insurance world can make you a little touched, but she’s not THAT wild and crazy!

Debby is also raising money for The Matthews House.  “The Matthews House is a non-profit organization that empowers young people, ages 16-21, who lack the family support to transition successfully into adulthood by providing the resources and support necessary for them to take control of their lives, shape positive futures for themselves and become successful contributors to their community.”

You can click on Debby’s boots to contribute to The Matthews House; anything you can give will be appreciated.

.

~

It’s a worthy cause that “gives young people the most precious gift of all; a chance to believe in themselves and reach for the stars”

If you’re traveling the Red Feather Lakes Rd this weekend – Watch out for all those crazy runners along the roadside  and if you're wondering why there are so many people running on the road- now you know:

It’s the Wild West Relay weekend!

That event would sound like great fun if I were 30 years younger:-)  But, I can still sit in a lawnchair and imagine the wonderful scenes they will see along the way!

Hi Myrl, I have to say, I favor the lawn chair idea!

Rob, I hope she wins too!  I'll have to find out who else is on her team, maybe I'll see you in Red Feather.

Lou, no you can't drive it, but you can ride with me! :-)

Kristi, each team member runs a portion of the relay, they don't have to run the whole 200 miles, but in this terrain, I don't see how they do any of it!  Pretty spectacular I think!

I have read a few books about really challenging races (like Badwater and one that took place in Mexico). I am intrigued that people could have so much stamina!

I would be able to run in a relay race on flat ground for about 5 minutes.  I am amazed at these people who can run for so long and uphill.

What a great event and sounds very challenging. I'm awed by those folks who can do this like your friend. And, she's doing it for a great cause too.

Mary,

I certainly hope the Wild West Boot adventure raises plenty of money for The Matthews House.  We're involved with something similar in the Marian House in the Springs... g

Melissa, on my way home from Red Feather this afternoon I passed 30-40 runners, running uphill...that seems to require an immense amount of stamina and most of them looked to be doing well!

Jane, you can go for 5 minutes!?  That's pretty good I'd say :-)  I'm amazed by them too, they're in great shape and many in the first group arrived at the Chapel around noon or 12:30!

Hi Toni, it looked pretty challenging to me.  I believe all the runners are running for a cause, which makes it all the more special!

Gordon, that's great that you are invoved with the Marion House in the Springs.  Debby had almost reached her goal of $1500. last night, but today I told her she just might break it!  You never know.

Gary, I think they're running through some very pretty country! I saw Debby at the Church in Red Feather around 12:30 this afternoon - looking good and happy!

Note to All:  The first runners showed up at the Chapel around noon - they will rest ( many had sleepling bags on the lawn so they'll be ready to run again when their other team members show up.  From what I gather, once the baton (wrist bands) are exchanged, the people who just ran are shuttled ahead to the next exchange stop and the rested runners continue the race.  Very well organized event!

Mary, Any running is a challenge to me now. CO has the hills and the altitude, both adding stress to the runners physical systems. The successful ones have trained for the event, and I will all those competing success.

Thanks for coming by Wayne, I agree with you - those hills and altitude do make it more challenging! One nice thing about running up here is the temperature; at least they're not running in 90 degrees. :-)

If I were a runner, this would be the most fun event! Especially running through the night with the full moon. Such a great trail and adventure. I loved reading about the Matthews House, too, and your friend Debby's support.

Hi Ann, 4 miles is good! I'm thinking 4 minutes uphill and I'd be whining like a little baby! LOL

Mara, the runners have a lot of fun and you're right about the night run - that would be something! Thanks Mara, I appreciate your comments about The Matthews House and I'm sure Debby will too!
