"Teen star bullied out of school" is a recent headline. As parents began the preparations for the first day of school the issue of bullying, and its consequences, has become a large concern. The headline references Rebecca Black, who gained fame on YouTube with her video Friday. Due to threats and harassment the decision was made for Rebecca to withdraw from her school.
Bullying defined by Wikipedia maybe" physical, verbal or emotional and is usually repeated over a period of time." Rebecca Black may represent an extreme case of fame attracting attention however many students have reported bullying in the schools. Riverside School Board of Education adopted a policy regarding bullying and cyberbullying on December 1, 2008.
Code 106 Harassment and bullying of students and employees are against federal, state and local policy and are not to be tolerated by the board. The board is committed to providing all students with a safe and civil school environment in which all members are treated with dignity and respect.
Recent research "shows that 60% of educators consider bullying the single most, or among the top 5 most important problems facing the schools. Experts recommend that schools should have:
- programs that focus on social environment
- programs that name clear rules and policies related to bullying
- the program is not the sole responsibility of one individual rather it requires community involvement
