Unless you've been living under a rock, you already know that you shouldn't put anything on the internet that you don't want everyone to see.    I never thought that this would be a problem for me as I've never posted any naked photos of myself that could come back to haunt me if I ever decided to run for President.

Recently I was doing Google searches to look up some old friends.  I soon became bored and decided to Google myself to see what's out there in the Wild, Wild West of the internet.  First, there were my websites and individual pages from those sites.  It's nice to know that they're actually showing up somewhere for a change.  Some of the blogs that I have written were there.  My goodness, did I really write all of those?  Some of them even sound like I knew what I was doing.

Then there were years of comments I have made on other websites, blogs and news articles from Yahoo, MSN, AOL and others.  I had no idea that comments made on a news article would show up forever.  Yikes!   Even my comments made to Active Rain blogs were there.   I forgot I made that comment and did I really say that?  Fortunately, I don't have any terrible secrets to worry about.  Thank God I'm not into surfing porn or other questionable sites. I don't know whether dating sites or personal ads would show up as I've never had the need to use any of them.  That could be trouble for some, especially for married folks.

Many politicians, athletes, businessmen and teachers have been brought down from scandals originatedVegasGirl on the internet.  Some started on Face Book or MySpace and had been dormant until they popped up at the peak of someone's career.  That funny video you did on YouTube several years ago, after you'd had 24 drinks, might not seem quite as funny when you're asked to explain it at your next job interview.  I didn't mention celebrities as most celebrities don't care about scandals, because any publicity is good publicity to them.

I learned a valuable lesson from all of this.  Never post anything on the internet that you don't want everyone to see.  Potential clients also Google us so you wouldn't want a compromising photo to undo that great listing presentation you just made to a client.  So always remember.....What goes on the internet, stays on the internet.  Unlike Las Vegas where everything might stay private, the internet is a very public place.
