Almost Speechless Sunday- Pretty in Pink!

Home Stager with Room Service Home Staging

roseate spoonbill

This is a favorite out at Green Cay... the Roseate Spoonbill.   Many visitors to Green Cay mistake them for Flamingos, but I think these beautiful birds are just as interesting.  Like other birds, their plumage was sought after for many years, causing these striking creatures to drop to  only 30 or 40 breeding pairs in Florida.  Conservation and placing them on a protected list has brought the population up to over 1000 pairs in our state.

As they wade through shallow water, their heads go back and forth with their bills in the water until they feel "dinner".   They're not always out at Green Cay but if you go early in the morning you might get a chance to see them.  Don't forget to bring your camera!

Very beautiful bird, Kathy. I would have thought it was a Flamingo too. Pretty in Pink is a very fitting title too.

Malcolm- all of us are so excited when we see one out there so if we have more than that we're tickled pink!!!

Barbara- I'm glad they're in your area too.  I think there's more than the 1000 pairs, at least I hope so.

Alexandra- I'd love to get a photo of them in flight but not that skilled...yet!

Jerry- I think they're in Texas too but I don't remember them from when I lived there.

Wanda- we have so much of our mess against Mother Nature that we have to fix!

Barbara- Sure, Barbara.. there aren't any gators at all in the area!!!  :)

What a gorgeous bird and I too would have mistaken them for a flamingo.  Now that you have pointed it out though, there are definite distinctions.  Hope you're enjoying the weekend!

Love that Spoonbill!  Reminds me of how Mother Nature has operated through the millennia.  Thanks for sharing so much of what makes your area special, Kathy!  We've got turkeys!

Lovely!  When I lived in Florida I had to learn the difference between Flamingos and Spoonbills--both are striking and stunning birds.

Lou- Thank you!! It was worth being bitten by all the bugs out now to get the pics!

Rebekah- I've been fascinated by them since I saw my first one over 4 years ago.  Hope you had a wonderful weekend.

Julia- LOL- we have turkeys too!!  In fact when we take the bikes up to RiverBend and if we're lucky we'll see some wild turkeys.

BARFF- I love pink and these just stand out.

Norma- I've seen more of the spoonbills than flamingos, except the plastic ones on lawns!!

David- Great Idea!!!!   I think a lot of the growers wouldn't go for it though.

Tony and Darcy- I'd never seen one until about 4 years ago.  They always attract everyone's attention.

Silvia- You know, I saw them when we moved back about 4 years ago, then it seems like they were pretty scarce the next year, and now they're back.

Kathy ~ At first glance, they look like Flamingos... Perhaps an offshoot from the same family?  Certainly just as pretty in pink.  Thanks for sharing your great photos!

Kathy-The name of the bird is a great fit, spoonbill. Are they arranged in sizes-teaspoonbill, tablespoonbill, ect? OK, I'm just being silly.

What a magnificent creation - pretty in pink!

There's something in the way it moves, looks, and makes you feel when you approach one that is so mystical and gives you a good feeling.

I'm so glad I got to see it this morning.

Have a wonderful day Kathy!

Mel- aren't they gorgeous!  I didn't see any this morning but hopefully they'll be back tomorrow.

Elyse- aren't those beaks interesting!  I don't know if this is a male or female.

Wayne- LOL.... that's so funny!

Patricia- I absolutely love the colors on these birds.  Some are a really light pink and yet I've seen some that were almost crimson.
