CHINATOWN in Victoria, BC

I love to wander around Chinatown, within in our beautiful city. It's vibrant - full of interesting sights, sounds, smells, languages and old buildings. How about this address?

Fan Tan Alley, Victoria, BC

This door is in Fan Tan Alley, a fascinating alleyway with glorious little entrances leading into curiosity shops! Take a look at this great virtual tour of the alley.

The whole area is colourful, bustling and noisy, with neon lights, traffic, tourists and people from all walks of life - not at all like the rest of the Victoria downtown  area, yet only a short walk from the Inner Harbour.

In 1858 the first Chinese immigrants arrived in Victoria from California and China after gold was discovered in the Fraser Valley. Chinatown Victoria begins on Cormorant Street between Government and Douglas Streets, with the main shopping area on Fisgard Street.

Come visit our little piece of China in Canada!

I enjoy visiting Chinatown in Toronto, you can't buy some of the things they have for sale in other parts of the city. It's always a fun experience.

Malcolm - I agree, Chinatown is always interesting, no matter which city it's in. Do you have any photos of Toronto's Chinatown? Would like to see them.

David,

Many downtown districts of large urban centres are lucky to have a "chinatown". this one looks great.

Hi Brian - Ahh yes, I imagine they're all interesting ... but ... Victoria's Chinatown, despite its small size, is second only in age in North America  to San Francisco's Chinatown. :)

Cheers.

David,

We love Vancouver, and we keep hearing how fabulous the Chinese food is there.  One of these days, we will hop on a flight just to check out the food, and the sights.  Have a great week A

PS I love Chinese red, when we had our offices in San Francisco, we had a wall painted the color of your door, it was beautiful. A

Hi Alexandra and Ron - thanks for your comment. Chinese food is not that high on my food favourites, but I do like the whole atmosphere of Chinatown. By the way, I am located in Victoria, which is on Vancouver Island - a ferry-ride or 10 mins flight from Vancouver.  I bet the office wall of chinese red made you all work harder!!

Come visit Victoria if you do ever get the chance to hop on that plane! You'll like it :)
