The Ugliest House in Ventura County Real Estate History....

The Ugliest House in Ventura County Real Estate History.....

....... has a light shining in the window.

Back in the day, when I first started real estate, my trainer for my first two transactions very wisely told me that if you looked at the ugliest house in town, it will most likely have a light shining in the window.light in window

He told me this because I was concerned that my first listing wasn't that great, was kind of ugly, and it would reflect badly on me (you see, it was all about me).

The light shining in the window announced to the world that yes, someone was living here, and thought well enough of it to spend some time here. I always remembered this and it has stood me well in judging many listings since.

Not too long ago, I came across another  "ugliest house In Ventura County Real Estate History," that I would be listing for sale. I will not be posting the picture of that home here in this blog because there is probably some child that grew up there and once called this place home. Or there may be a newlywed couple that at one time rented this house as their "first home."

I cannot displace their memories of the house they once called home with a picture labeled  "the ugliest house in Ventura County Real Estate History."

And I cannot have people point and laugh in derision.....

because even now there is a light shining in the window.....

P.S. The house sold in 24 hours with multiple offers. It is not so ugly after all!

Thats a great story sandy. i loved it. if it wasn't a building it might have become a 'tear jerker'. I love how it moves the perspective off yourself and to the resident or prior residents and that it was and is a 'home'.

I'm suggesting.

So true, Lisa! And sometimes they hide that light and don't let anyone in.  Good point and something to think about.

Hi Robert, thanks so much for suggesting! I'm humbled by your kind words.

Sandy, Had a similar house recently. 1100sqft, one bathroom- upstairs, only 2 bedrooms and the original 1930s kitchen and bath. Closed in just over 30 days. I couldn't believe it.

Great wisdom and a wonderful story!  It makes me think back to my first rental "home" as a newlywed - to most it would look "ugly" - but it's filled with beautiful memories and I love to drive by it and think back to those first days together.

This is so true! Even ugly houses need a little love! Even ugly houses are treasured by someone! You get kind of attached when you see your life history played out in a certain place! Thanks for your thoughts!  :)

Sandy - Nicely stated. I've written this at some point in the past, but part of our job as agents is to try to see homes through the eyes of our clients, no matter what the price range (and sometimes this involves showing homes that are truly "ugly" to us). Great post here.

There are truly some ugly houses out there but so often I'll see a home that looks like a train wreck only to fing that my client loves it and wants to make an offer.  I even had a client like a home in original and nearly mint condition from the 1950s fall in love with the home.  Even after I told them it would cost a fortune to update they still liked it. Go figure.

Sandy, there is a house out there for everyone. You just have to find the right buyer.

Sandy - LOL  Btw you&me, this is the reason why I often decline to go and view homes with friends or clients.  It's odd how often I get asked to do this too.  As flattering it is to know that these friends and clients value my opinion, I'm afraid I am a terrible person to view property with.  Rather than see the "potential" a home has, I tend to see the "deal breakers".  Not the kind of stuff that prospective homeowners need to hear.

As someone else mentioned, "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" and just because I think some property is "ugly" doesn't mean that someone else doesn't see a "future home" with their "visions" of what a property can someday be.

Hi Jane, Glad you enjoyed the post.
Judi, great weekend to you too.
Hi Susan, I love that you are sentimental about your first rental home. Makes me feel better that I did the right thing.
Hi Rosalie, "your life history played out in a certain place" is exactly why these homes are more than houses.
Thanks Jason for also spreading the word.
Hi Jeanne, Don't you just feel good all over when that happens. That is the best part of what we do.
Hi Scott, Yes ugly translates to low price and a good deal many times. That is what happened here too.
Hi Bryan, I stop myself when showing houses and am going to say something like how awful the tile is in the kitchen. Later my client says she loves the kitchen tile.
Hi Michael, you've got it exactly right.
Hi Julia, He was good and I'm glad he taught me a lot of really good things.

Sandy,

Such a bright perspective!  Whether it is a house or a person, the inner light is much more important than the facade. Beauty comes from within.

HI Donne, so true that they have their own unique vision. That's funny that they want you to go with them, but it shows that you have forged a connection with them and that is a good thing.
