I-465 Renamed to USS Indianapolis Memorial Highway
Yesterday the sailors who died in a 1945 torpedo strike were honored here in Indianapolis by the renaming of Interstate 465 (I-465) to the USS Indianapolis Memorial Highway. The ceremony was held at the USS Indianapolis War Memorial in downtown Indianapolis on Tuesday.
July 30th, 1945...12:14 AM, a Japanese submarine fired a torpedo at the USS Indianapolis. Hundreds of sailors were killed as a direct result of the torpedo blast while approx 900 others were forced to float in the shark infested waters (many without a lifeboat) until help could arrive. After four days only 316 men were alive. Unfortunately the others perished to shark attacks, exposure, and dehydration. This attack was the largest loss of life at one time across the history of the U.S. Navy.
Signs will be placed along the 465 loop displaying it's new name. When you see them, give thanks to those who lost their lives for our freedom and independence.
