It Is Well With My Soul

"My sin, O the bliss of this glorious thought; my sin not in part but the whole; is nailed to the cross and I bear it no more. Praise the Lord, Praise the Lord O my soul!" Such power words written by a man at one of the lowest points in his life. Horatio G. Spafford was a successful attorney in Chicago who was heavily invested in real estate when the great Chicago fire consumed the city in 1871. He lost a fortune in that fire followed very closely by the death of his only son, who was only 4. His son contracted scarlet fever and died from it.

Horatio used work as an output for his grief and worked to rebuild the city but in  November of 1873 he decided to take his family to Europe to visit D.L. Moody in England then enjoy a vacation. Something came up though which kept him in New York but he sent his wife and four daughters on ahead. On November 22, 1873 the ship that Horatio's wife Anna and the daughters were traveling in sank and killed the 4 daughters along with 222 others. Only Anna and 46 others survived the disaster. When Anna reached Europe she cabled Horatio "Saved Alone."

Horatio immediately got on a ship to join Anna. Along the way the captain of the ship Horatio was traveling on took him aside one day in December to tell him they were passing through the waters where his daughters were lost at sea. Horatio went to his cabin but couldn't sleep. The genesis of the song "It is Well with My Soul" began there in that cabin.

At his lowest point, after losing so much that was dear to him, Horatio could still say that it was well with his soul. Is it well with your soul today? Are you at your lowest point? Have you seemingly no where to turn. Horation knew the answer. Your sin and my sin, not in part but the whole, has been nailed to the cross with Jesus and he waits for you today. It can be well with your soul. Just reach out to Jesus. He's there waiting with open arms. He wants to forgive you, console you, give you hope for your future. Most of all He wants to give you eternal life with Him.

Walter - thank you for sharing this beautiful story.  How incredible it is that some of the most inspiring songs have come from the darkest of days by the writers.

The pastor of the first church plant my wife worked on would not greet people with, "How are you"?  Instead, he would say, "Is it well with your soul?"
