What is "Location Neutral"--And What Does that have to do with Steamboat Springs, CO

As the rest of the country’s housing market stalls, Steamboat Springs, CO, is experiencing unprecedented growth. How can our resort town continue to appreciate while other markets stall? One reason is that Steamboat Springs is now home for more “location neutral” businesses.

Before cell phones, the Internet, faxes and Blackberries, people who lived in Steamboat had to work in Steamboat, but that’s no longer true. Approximately 10% of our workforce–a number that continues to grow–works from Steamboat but does business in another part of the country.

People who have the luxury to live where they want and conduct their business electronically want to live in Steamboat Springs. It is a beautiful town with a real downtown with a true sense of community and endless recreational activities. People can ski, golf, hike, bike, fish, hunt, or relax in the hot tub and enjoy the mountain views.

As the world changes and businesses become more “location neutral”, Steamboat will be a place where families choose to raise their children and people will choose to enjoy all the recreation Steamboat offers.

We too, have seen a huge increase in people who aren't tethered to any one place to work and with an internet connection, can work anywhere they like!  I had a whole firm of patent attorneys relocate here from New York, just because they could!  All they needed was a T1 line.

Pagosa Springs is starting to see it's fare share of this crowd. I think its wonderful in our age of technology to have this ability to work wherever you would like...maybe I should go to Costa Rica Hmmmmmmmm.

Joanne,

I can't believe a whole FIRM moved out.  That is either a small firm or a mountain loving group!

Chris, If you go to Costa Rica, don't sell your Pagosa Springs house.  The way prices are going, you may be priced out of the ability to return....

Eliese,

I like the sound of "location neutral" and doing that in Steamboat Springs would be a good idea. In some fields you can conduct business electronically, like in mortgage lending. That's something to think about.

Esko,

As a matter of fact, I had lunch with a mortgage broker who lives in Steamboat and does the majority of his work in California.  People are looking for safer, saner lives and small mountain communities fit the bill.
