Butterfly populations around the world are shrinking. While most of us would miss the aesthetics of the butterfly, it’s wise to remember that this beautiful insect also plays an important role in our eco-system.



Butterflies, while not as important as bees at this job, do play a role in the pollination process. Without pollination, the fruits and vegetables we now enjoy in abundance, would become less available and more expensive.

In addition, butterflies provide food for other species, thereby aiding in nature’s precarious life cycle balance. Wildlife biologists say the butterfly population is a good indicator as to the health of our planet.

The number of Monarch butterflies has been declining in North America for more than a decade.  A loss of habitat and the use of broad-spectrum pesticides has contributed to this decline.

While conservationists scramble to come up with an solution to this problem, there are a few simple things we can do to help.

• Butterflies drink nectar, therefore, planting native flowers that provide this food source will help local butterfly populations.

•  Plant “Milkweed” in a sunny spot in your yard - Monarchs will only lay their eggs on Milkweed plants.

 

•  Reduce or eliminate the use of broad-spectrum chemicals in your gardens - pesticides are highly toxic to butterflies. 

 

It’s sad to imagine a world without butterflies - it's certain our gardens and our lives would be noticeably less beautiful.
