What is Xeriscape?

If you haven't heard of Xeriscape yet you probably will soon. This is definitive method of reducing water consumption through the appropriate use of landscaping. The state of Texas has been struggling with numerous water related problems, including drought and a population explosion. Recent analysis of the situation showed that as much as one quarter of the state's fresh water supply has been going to water the landscaping.

By using seven simple but effective principles the Xeriscape can be applied so that homes and businesses do not have to give up their landscaping but the fresh water consumption can be cut dramatically. Focusing on water conservation right now will help the state remain fertile and sustainable in the future. This is an imperative step when it comes to improving the overall use of water world wide.

The principles are fairly easy on paper. Applying all seven of them may very well require the help of a professional well trained in Xeriscape. Step one is to have a plan. The plan that the landscaping will follow should provide all of the basic needs of the property owner, including concerns over budget, the way the landscaping appears, low water use.

Step two is a step that very few landscapers apply nationally to traditional services. The soil needs to be analyzed. Understanding the natural absorption of the original soil will help prepare the soil properly. Organic material can be added for the beds that will hold landscaped plants, shrubs, and trees.

The type of plants and shrubs that end up in any garden will have a huge impact on how much water is needed to help them thrive. By choosing plants, shrubs, and trees that are not only appropriate for the region but are also less likely to gulp more water the conservation effort rises.

Everything from the type of mulch to the type of grass that is chosen will influence the water supply necessary to keep the plants healthy. These steps require knowledge of how the plants will react in what kind of soil, and which plants are naturally more conservations friendly. When it comes to grasses careful selection is even more important. Grasses need quite a bit more water to sustain health with the exception of a few that are naturally prepared for the area.

Learning the best and most effective ways to care for landscaping is part of the Xeriscape protocol as well. Most people either over water, water at the wrong time of the day, or water too frequently. In teaching property owners the basics of watering this method can help reduce water use even more.

Here in California we just have a lot of dead spots everywhere. This does sound like the greenest thing to do unless you want to put fake green sod or rocks in your yard. Extremely fasinating.
