California Pizza Kitchen Mission Viejo

Although I haven't been as public about it as Alan (really? a daily total on each blog?) but I've been losing weight since last March. I guess the winter festivities really added up this year. I also noticed some disturbing belly fat....I've always had a flat tummy and this was a concern, as I approach 50 years old.

But.......this week I bought skinny jeans in my skinny size!!!! Whoo hoo!

This time I avoided the cabbage soup diet, the "I don't eat anything at all" diet, and my favorite....the 9-Day Wonder Diet (which is truly a wonderful crash diet). I just ate less and moved more.

Who know this was the way to do it?

So I've been on the watch out for low-cal options at restaurants. I even have a cool app for that. I feel so hip.

One of my favorite restaurants is the California Pizza Kitchen in Mission Viejo. I know that pizza doesn't sound like it's very low in calories, but there are a surprising number of ways to enjoy the restaurant and stay in your diet budget. For instance, several of my favorite salads are under 500 Calories each. Of course, these are the half portions, but that's plenty of food for most of us.

Roasted Vegetable Salad with Grilled Shrimp 394

Cobb Salad with Ranch Dressing: 469

Caesar Salad: 253

Chinese Chicken Salad: 331

And there are pizza options also. Entire pizzas are about 1000-1200 calories and you can save 20 calories for honey wheat, 104 calories for gluten-free crusts and 172 calories for the thin crust. Often my husband and I will split a salad and a pizza....with him eating 2/3s and me eating 1/3 of the pizza. Real bargin for lunch or dinner. Sample:

Half Caesar Salad and Thin Crust Roasted Spinach and Artichoke Pizza, total of 1572 calories and my portion is about 472. Love it!

So dieting doesn't mean suffering with cottage cheese and iceberg lettuce. Head to the California Pizza Kitchen in Mission Viejo, get some pizza and forget the guilt at home. I love to!

Karen, good for you.  I'm trying to leave food on my plate, and have been going to the gym 3 times a week. I'm not wearing skinny jeans by any stretch of the imagination, but things are fitting better and I feel SO much better. My reasons for trying are to combat a bad back. The stronger I get, the better it fares. Whatever our reasons for doing it, at least we're doing it.

OMG, girl--you're makin' me hungry!  I'm a believer in moderation. And sadly, as we get older, the exercise we've always done has to be INCREASED to stay WHERE WE ARE. Bummer, huh?

However, I've noticed now that I'm able to run again (got started on a new fab all natural joint supplement), those inner thighs (and butt) are lookin' a whole lot better in those jeans--which can be somewhat unforgiving.

Been a vegie for 37 years or so...that's my diet plan. It works, too! Doesn't mean I have to cut out dessert, tho.

Karen: Whatever gets us to move...right?

Gayle: Veggie? really? would miss my burgers, but my husband does that every once in awhile for a year or so....so when he does, I do it too.

In my teen years I spent a month with a then elderly couple in Salerno Italy. I am trying to picture their reaction to a roasted spinach and artichocke pizza. The expressions I see in my minds eye have me laughing out loud.

Eating less and moving more is the best way to do it.  It will stay off that way.  And knowing there is a delicious way to accomplish fewer calories makes it easy.

That does sound delicious.  It's warm today in Portland and those dishes seem like the perfect summer meal (and diet food too)
