5 Ways to Recognize an Eco-Friendly Development - Asheville Style
Looking for sustainable innovation in the eco-friendly developments? Here's information that fits no matter where you live, based on leading edge examples I call... Asheville Style!
Eco-friendly developments can be found just around the corner, or around the bend...some are urban and some are rural. You may be attracted to miles and miles of hiking trails that adjoin the National Forest. You may be attracted to the community amenities. But, whether you find your eco-savvy dream in a rural or an urban area,
you can be certain that an eco-friendly development takes into serious account LAND USE (see graphic) and that this community is NOT defined by Location.
Well then, how does one define an eco-friendly neighborhood and/or development? Is this a choice of lifestyle? Is it based on some idea?
Eco-villages are defined by concept. For me, this is about sustainable innovation-- a "green plan" that encourages both social contact and individual space coupled with the understanding that, as a member of the community, you are entrusted with a shared sense of caring for all who live here. And, how do you know when you have found the “real thing” and can therefore move forward with a buying decision? Just take this handy list along with you.
5 Ways to Recognize an Authentic Eco Community
1.Preferably, all the homes are "Greenbuilt" that is- Healthy Built® (Asheville, NC) or LEED™ (national) - and are certified as such.
2. The development/community is grounded in respect for nature and natural surroundings: Wildlife conservation and restoring habitat diversity, rainwater harvesting, edible landscape design, and there is abundant common green space. Neighborliness is supported. You will find common structures, community gardens, and opportunities to get together to enjoy the land and each other... You will also find a multigenerational & family-friendly environment
.
3. The developers have indicated a commitment to meet the needs of the present without impacting the ability of future generations to meet their needs, too.
4. Whole-systems design that seeks balance among social, economic and environmental imperatives
5. An obvious dedication and enthusiasm for quality of life and lifestyle !
Here are links that will take you to more information about two (2) such communities (there are MANY more in the Greater Asheville Area)- should you desire a little deeper look ..LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU THINK!
