Technology Predictions - LOL

By

Though-out the years the naysayers have made some incredible predictions, my parents included.  When I was a  Junior in highschool, I was offered an opportunity to learn computer programing free, I wanted to do it but need parental approval, my parents said "no, it won't last".  When it comes to getting it wrong they were in good company.

"Computers in the future may weigh no more than 1.5 tons." -- Popular Mechanics, forecasting the relentless march of science, 1949

"I think there is a world market for maybe five computers." -- Thomas Watson, chairman of IBM, 1943

"But what ... is it good for?" -- Engineer at the Advanced Computing Systems Division of IBM, 1968, commenting on the microchip.

"640K ought to be enough for anybody." -- Bill Gates, 1981

This 'telephone' has too many shortcomings to be seriously considered as a means of communication. The device is inherently of no value to us," -- Western Union internal memo, 1876.

"Everything that can be invented has been invented," -- Charles H. Duell, Commissioner, US Office of Patents, 1899.

"The super computer is technologically impossible. It would take all of the water that flows over Niagara Falls to cool the heat generated by the number of vacuum tubes required." -- Professor of Electrical Engineering, New York University

"There is no reason anyone would want a computer in their home." -- Ken Olson, president, chairman and founder of Digital Equipment Corp., 1977

Several reasons why we should never say never.

Kind of like the folks that say "real estate is in the dumper and won't rebound for a long time"..

Exactly like that.  Just goes to show that the experts don't know as much as they think they do.

Cindy, I learned never to say never when I had kids.  Those people who said "My kids will never......" , never had kids!  Your computer quotes are interesting.  It's amazing how time changes the way people think.

You are up late tonight.   Life is amazing.  There is an old saying that goes "if you're not moving forward, you're falling behind" (or something like that).  There is no such thing as standing still.  How many kids do you have?

I have 2 sons (18 & 15½) and 2 stepsons (25 & 23).  My 2 live with us here in Vegas.  The oldest is in college and the youngest is a Sophomore/Junior in high school.  The oldest stepson stayed in PA and the younger stepson moved here with us, then got his helicopter pilot license and has been in Texas, Alaska and now back to Texas.

Also, as far as technology, my dad, who is 89 uses his computer everyday.  He pays his bills online, checks his bank balance, emails and even surfs the net!

Good Morning Roberta,

Your dad sounds amazing.  4 boys, that had to be a handful.  My son would like to get his helicopter license, any good schools in your area?  He has been checking out a few, I'd like a recommendation from someone who has already gone through it.  Have a great day!

Good Morning Debbie,

There are a lot of companies that are no longer  in business, they didn't see that change was/is an opportunity.   Hind sight is always 20/20.
