What an absolutely lovely day. The weather was perfect..and has cooled down a tad. So, I had my coffee and red velvet cupcake from Tazza in Somers NY outside. It was made even more special by a phone call from one of my favorite Active Rainers Pat Kennedy. (I had the pleasure of meeting her at Rain Camp in Atlantic City).
Anyway, I had a bit of time before my 4pm carpet appointment in Somers NY so I just sat outside catching up on estimates and savoring the coffee. I overheard a long conversation between a woman who volunteers for a place where they have an elderly community. (I'm not sure what type of place this is because I wasn't really paying attention and I was on the phone part of the time). She was talking to a man who is 85 explaining the benefits of the community (and it sounded impressive). She mentioned that they had recommended vendors for movers, etc...and of course my ears went up.
As many of you know, I recently had a customer ripped off by a mover. And, I've heard plenty of other stories recently of customers getting ripped off by contractors. Recalling my conversation w/ Pat Kennedy, I politely interrupted these 2 and asked if I could make a suggestion...I mentioned that Angies List is a wondeful place to find trusted contractors as well as doctors and maybe this volunteer committee could join and offter that benefit to their members. It always seems the women and the elderly are more likely to get ripped off by people so this would be a really good thing for them to have.
Anyway, as luck would have it, she needs some carpeting and asked for my card. Turns out she is from Chappaqua, too (my hometown). But, that's not the lucky part. She kept saying how lucky I was and that she can make this really worth my while. She lives in Heritage Hills, a community where I've done a bunch of work...and they have a TON of homes...and her nickname is the "Mayor of Somers" because she knows everyone and and everyone asks her for recommendations on people. She said she is going to call me this week.. The Flooring Girl is very lucky. (Oh gosh, I know sound like Vegas Bob).
Anyway, there are more opportunities out there than we realize. We just need to be open and try to help others.
