Murals Suck! Let's Hear it for the Mural Haters!

This totally cracked me up this morning! I live in beautiful Seattle WA and we also have many beautiful murals (and some pretty whack graffiti as well).

One argument is that we have major construction to worry about so why would we dump tax dollars to a mural.

A common rebuttal is that the art and construction budgets are totally separate so that isn't really a valid argument.

A friend of mine had this to say, "So we also don't have art supplies in a lot of our public schools they've even cut cursive writing from the curriculum! So, grown men and women have the right to pursue their art and our kids get the short end of the stick?! And it's not even a pencil!"

Murals Suck? Umm... Really?

I suppose the same people who think murals suck also hate puppies and ice cream, too (the allergic and lactose intolerant excluded, of course). Wondering who would say that? Well apparently there are a few Philadelphia neighbors who have their panties in a ruffle over the murals popping up in the city. The two most recent murals that have caught some flack are the new mural at the Bodine High School and a mosaic led by the renowned artist Isaiah Zagar. This post over at Plan Philly asks if Philadelphia is suffering from "mural fatigue".

I suppose I have to give credit to the Mural Haters for sticking up for their opinions. Just because their sentiment is not popular does not mean they are not entitled to express their dissatisfaction. And come to think of it, I suppose if I dig deep and get honest with myself, I might be getting a little bored of the pretty flowers and swirly designs painted on every blank wall and wooden fence in the city. But when it comes right down to it, it sure beats looking at a cement wall. I'm curious. What are your favorite or most hated murals in Philly?

Here are a few that I'll never tire of looking at:

Bar Ferdinand in Northern LibertiesUnion Trust Parking Lot

Lehigh between Aramingo and Frankford Ave in "Fishington"

There is a huge mural in Cary that has pictures all over it of past important things like the first high school, the train station being built, etc. I have heard arguements on both sides saying that they LOVE it and others thinking it was pointless. I can understand not liking if there are an insane number of them in an area, but I find them to be very captivating.

I think we need to re-group and really get our priorities straight.  Our kids are the future and without education, we will be in big trouble.  You can see that happening already with the degredation of values and education...

Thanks for the comments guys!!!

I do see both sides of the coin on this, but knowing that the people we will ultimately depend on are getting the short end of the stick does leave me wondering who's really paying here?

No one ever agrees on anything.  That is why our nation is so amazing.  We have choices.  My friends from overseas are always amazed by the choices.  For example, going to the grocery store, we find a wall of ice cream choices.  What I hate is when people take away my choices by taxing me more so other people can have their choice or tell me what to do.
