Blogging Is A Waste Of Time

Real Estate Broker/Owner with Amanda Davidson Real Estate Group 0225221517

Someone who shall remain nameless told me last week that blogging is a waste of time. We got into a discussion about it. He has been in real estate three times as long as I have and has a more “old school” approach. Lots of direct mail and advertises in the newspaper. That’s no problem but, until you’ve tried to blog don’t knock it. I had to be convinced to blog myself, I love social media but, the thought of blogging was overwhelming to me. I have my coach to thank for giving me the encouragement to just write about what I know. Once I had my first post up it wasn’t so scary and since then it’s turned into something that I enjoy.

It wasn’t until this weekend that I had my first call from someone who has been following my blog and is relocating from Minneapolis. I was so thrilled that my efforts had finally turned into a lead. She liked that I had a mix of local posts, market stats and what made her call was my story of how I got into real estate. It was a great feeling to know that someone is reading what I write.

I saw the other agent yesterday and mentioned that I had gotten a call from my blog and it might be worth trying. His response was not what I was expecting – he came back with it’s you “young” agents that think the internet is the only way to get leads. Really? How so Mr. Experienced? I was trying to be helpful and give him a new idea for generating business. I didn’t say the internet was the only way but, it’s not just me that knows it’s a productive venue for leads. No, I haven’t been a Realtor longer than he has but, I am an experienced agent and if someone is offering me advice I’m going to listen. You never know what you might learn, there’s no need to reinvent the wheel.

Well I personally am pretty happy that there are not more agents blogging. Are they other ways to get leads? Absolutely. Is the Internet the only way. Certainly not. But to pooh pooh it entirely is rather short sighted. I say fine - stick to your lead generating techniques and I'll enjoy mine.

This attitude, IMO and experience, is pretty common still. But that's OK.

Someone who tells you it doesn't work is actually all better for you. Less competition. You should totally agree instead of having the discussion. LOL.

We learn a lot from other's blogs about how to blog and make the best of it. It is their loss if they are not open to the idea.

Blogging is a waste of time, and so is the telephone. Just write a letter and put it in the mail!

I dont want to rule out old school as it serves a purpose but you have to adapt and change and blogging and social media is an excellent format and a great next wave.

Amanda, congratulations on the lead. There are going to be those who think it's a total waste of time, then there are those who know it's not a total waste of time, but don't want to put in the time, or effort. Keep doing what you are doing, and forget what the rest say. Blogging has been the one of the best things I've done for my business. Much more success to you!

Congrats on the lead from blogging. It is just a matter of time. Most of us will get a few leads from blogging.

Amanda  One cool thing about real estate offices is you don't have to wonder what works.  Just look at the leaderboard on the wall.  The agent with the most closings is doing the most right stuff.

Amanda. Prove him wrong! From today track your calls, and leads you get for the next six months. I think you will be amazed if you keep blogging. For those of us who continue to share how we work, how we are helping homebuyers and sellers and givng the readers local relevant real estate information,we reap the benefits while others complain how slow it is.

Hi Amanda,

What a lot of responses!

My best description is that there are a lot of real estate agents who are retired. They just don't know it yet!

Amanda, you are on the right track, unlike your colleague.  I do market reports each month of the production of the agents in our Board.  I'm seeing a huge shift in power, and it's going to those agents who are utilizing the internet.  Those that don't are falling down in the production rankings.  Keep it up!

Amanda for me blogging has replaced the time i used to spend cold calling. I get to meet great new people, learn a few things, be entertained and get massive exposure which leads to tons of leads and more clients. I have the same conversation often with many of the old timers, i have given up explaining up and tell them to look at the results, they speak for themselves.

Good job..!  I constantly hear that alternative ways of lead generation are a waste of time.   Can you imagine standing n line at the grocery store and having someone ask what you do for a living, tell them you are an agent, and then turn and walk away.  Anyone that tells you anything similar to “that won’t work” or “that’s a waste of time” is clearly unable to see that there is always a new way to skin a cat.   I work for a software as a service company that provides systems and leads for agents, teams and Brokerages.  But that doesn’t mean that are not other ways to generate leads, advertise yourself, and in the end become successful.  I fully believe that hard work will get things done.  I also think that I would like to work less harder and spend less money, in turn make more money.  Does that even seem logical?

Can't tell you the number of agents who have told me blogging is pointless.  Most of them are begging for business while I'm struggling to keep up with all I have on my plate!

I see many more "blog deals" in your future.

Well in actuality blogging can be less effective if you do the "Members Only" topics. The localism blogs are usually more productive. But I wouldn't consider either type a "waste of time."
