Charities Selling our Information

I don’t know how you feel, but I’m fed up with all the Junk Mail solicitationshitting my mailbox and Inbox on a daily basis. Every time I send a contribution to a non-profit agency, I am soon barraged with mail from similar agencies asking me to contribute to them as well. Or better yet, all I have to do is send them a check, and within three weeks they are asking me to send them a little more!

I know times are tough, and having been a director of a non-profit agency myself, I know how these agencies rely heavily on donations, but the way our mailing lists are being sold to all these agencies is upsetting. Here’s how it works:

You send a check to an organization to support Cancer research, orParkinson’s research, or perhaps Alzheimer’s research. Within weeks your mailbox is flooded with similar agencies asking you to contribute to their similar cause. A few months ago I sent a check to the ASPAC. Within a two week period, every non-profit agency affiliated with animals was asking me to support them.

Here’s another thing that irks me along these lines. The Veterans association keeps sending me nickels. If I toss the envelope away, I’ve just tossed five cents away. If I keep the nickel and decide not to support the organization, then I feel guilty….which is the premise behind the nickel in the first place. I hate to think how many nickels are mailed out each week. This must cost them a bloody fortune!

I also have maps upon maps upon maps because I support our National Parks. I don’t want any more of their maps. I was merely trying to support the upkeep of our beautiful National parklands. They should not be using my hard-earned money to print maps to send out to everyone. That defeats the purpose behind my giving them funds to sustain their parks.

And why is the Zoological Society wanting to send me tee shirts? I don’t want any more tee shirts. Why is it that I can’t just give to a few charities of my choice without having all these similar charities come begging for a “slice of my pie?”

Here are two organizations you can use to STOP much of your unwanted JUNK MAIL.

Would you like to stop all those credit card offers you get through the mail. Try going to this site to stop these unsolicited financial offers.

IMPORTANT: If you or someone you know is interested in buying or selling a home in the Palm Desert Area, try searching properties on the same Desert Area MLS Realtor’s use, or give me a call….or visit my website at Palm Springs Homes and Estates. I will be happy to give you or your referral my “red carpet service.” After the sale, I will send you a $50 Gift Certificatetowards dinner in a fabulous Palm Springs Area Restaurant so you can celebrate!

HI Nancy,

Good post. Think of all the trees that are used to create the flyers and envelopes that are sent out by charitable organizations, which are then thrown away by those on the receiving end of their letters. Makes no sense.

I donate to Children, Inc., the Access Fund and my local church. The first two organizations actually have a box you can check to protect your personal information which I checked.

Good luck,

Bill MacBride

I have used Catalog Choice for a while but have not heard of the others.  Sometimes, there is a box you can check that lets you choose not to get some useless free item.  I also hate the waste in sending out junk no one wants - use it for the charity for heaven's sake!!

Great tips. Already signed up on the DMA site. My postman will thank me, later of course, since this will take awhile. Tweeted and liked it as well. Thanks.

Great comments and tips. I wish all organizations used boxes to state we don't want their tee shirts, pens, maps, etc. The charities would make more money and we would have less cluttered mailboxes adn trash cans!
