Like the rest of Washington, DC I was stunned when the earth began shaking yesterday afternoon. At first I thought that it was someone moving something or a big truck driving by and then it quickly became clear it was much more.
This is not the first earthquake i've experienced so I would definitely say I was much calmer than many of my colleagues. However, this is one of the strongest i've felt.
As soon as the news began to spread people began trying to call, text, facebook, or email. Cell phones were down so communication was very difficult.
Eventually I was able to connect with my friends and family in Jamaica who were concerned that we were all ok. In the same breath, they were expressing concern about what was going to happen with Hurricane Irene this weekend.
I couldn't help but notice how bizarre it was to have to Jamaican people concerned about the safety of people in DC at the hands of earthquakes and hurricanes.
What's next - snow for them?
